Brandon Watson just wrote on the Windows Phone Developer Blog that Windows Phone Mango is now available for developers to install on their own retail devices! To do this, you need a developer account (http://create.msdn.com), a developer unlocked Windows Phone, and the new Windows Phone Developers Tools Beta 2.

To install Mango on your own device, here’s what you need to do:

  • Download the Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta 2 – You will need to update your developer tools to update your phone and to deploy your apps, so run…get them now.
  • Read the instructions before updating – These are very important steps which you need to follow to the letter. We’re committed to supporting our developer community with such an early access program, so if you have questions, start with the forums, which we are monitoring.

The Windows Phone SDK includes the following

  • Windows Phone SDK 7.1 (Beta2)
  • Windows Phone Emulator (Beta2)
  • Windows Phone SDK 7.1 Assemblies (Beta2)
  • Silverlight 4 SDK and DRT
  • Windows Phone SDK 7.1 Extensions for XNA Game Studio 4.0
  • Microsoft Expression Blend SDK Preview for Windows Phone 7.1
  • WCF Data Services Client for Window Phone 7.1
  • Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7

As an added bonus to students, Brandon also told about a program where Microsoft will give out 50 special Windows Phone Mango Developer devices to students.

This is especially well timed for the tens of thousands of student developers who have registered through DreamSpark or related programs. Just as our Spring Cleaning program encouraged developers to finish up their projects over the past few months, delivering thousands of new apps, summer break is the perfect time for student developers to relax and have some fun with Mango. With the free Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta 2 and free access to Mango, now is the perfect time to see what you can do with Windows Phone. To make it even more interesting for students looking for a great summer project, we’ve set aside 50 Mango phones for those students who are building the next big thing on Windows Phone. Want one? Here’s what to do:

  1. Make sure you’re registered for DreamSpark
  2. Download and install Expression Studio Ultimate and the new Mango Windows Phone Developer Tools (available free as a member of DreamSpark)
  3. Get the free Sketchflow Template for Windows Phone and create a Sketchflow mock-up of your app
  4. Post the Sketchflow mock-up somewhere online and tweet out the link using the hash tag #WPAppItUp
  5. We will review all prototypes and will contact the developers who submit the best ones and send them a special Mango developer device

Enjoy the Mango bits and don’t forget to show your Windows Phone with Mango to your friends!

This is a big problem for me! geoDefense has finally been released for Windows Phone 7. Back in the days when I had an iPhone, I couldn’t stop playing this game. And now it has hit my Windows Phone 7 too. geoDefense is a tower defense game with awesome graphics. Enemies will follow a certain path, and you need to annihilate them before they reach their target.

geoDefense costs only $2.99, and is also available as a free trial. Fire up the Marketplace on your WP7 and give geoDefense a try!

Yesterday’s TechEd Europe 2010 opening keynote is now available for you to watch. The most important Windows Phone 7 ( ;) ) is right at the beginning of the video, se be sure to at least watch that part!

Here’s a video where you can see how PDF files show on Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

As of today, the Windows Phone 7 app submission process on App Hub is now open to all registered Windows Phone Marketplace developers. Please take full advantage of your Marketplace developer account by submitting your Windows Phone 7 apps or games to the Marketplace now.

The biggest change with App Hub is that with your existing annual subscription you can now submit apps and games for both the Windows Phone Marketplace and the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. As a developer whose account existed prior to this integration you may need to take a few extra steps to ensure access. If you experience difficulties logging into App Hub for the first time, try these four steps:

  1. Go to xbox.com
  2. Sign in using your Marketplace developer credentials
  3. Review and accept the Xbox Live Terms of Use agreement
  4. Return to App Hub and select My dashboard (Windows Phone 7 or profile). You may need to select this option twice (the first time could give the same behavior, but the second time should work).

You can find a full walkthrough of the application submission process here. Once submitted, it typically takes 3–5 business days for your app to be certified and then published.

First Windows Phone 7 guy

Jourdan Templeton is the first lucky guy to spend his money on a Windows Phone 7. New Zealand is the first place where the OS and hardware went on sale.

Microsoft wrote the following tweet to promote this guy:

Congrats to this guy, and congrats to Microsoft for starting the Windows Phone 7 era :)

Windows Phone 7 was today announced with a big event in NYC. HTC was the biggest player during the Windows Mobile era, and they tend to keep that spot now with Windows Phone 7.

HTC HD7

Maybe the most waited new device is the successor for the HD2, which in Windows Phone 7 time is now called HD7. The HD7 comes with a 4.3″ WVGA touch screen, 1GHz CPU, 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 16GB internal storage, 576MB RAM, Bluetooth, WiFi n and a weight of 162 grams. The HTC HD7 will be available via T-Mobile in the US, O2 and Movistar in Europe and SingTel in Asia.

HTC 7 Surround

The HTC 7 Surround again is a more entertainment oriented device, with a cool new sliding out speaker. The 7 Surround has a 3.8″ touch screen, 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. Other than that, this device is equal to the HTC HD7.

HTC7 Mozart

The HTC 7 Mozart comes with the best camera of this quartet. It has a 8-megapixel camera, with HD video and a Xenon flash to light up your low-lite scenes. This whole thing is packed inside an aluminum unibody design. A 3.7″ WVGA touch screen and 8GB worth of internal storage also comes with this phone.

HTC 7 Trophy

The last new phone is called the HTC 7 Trophy. This phone should be the cheapest of these four phones. It comes with a 3.8″ WVGA touch screen, 5-megapixel camera and 720p video recording. HTC didn’t share any additional info of this phone. Will make a new post when we know more :)

Windows Phone 7 Launch Date

What has previously only been a rumor, turned into a fact today when Neowin learned that Windows Phone 7 will launch on October 21st.  The first official demo event will be held in New York on October 11th, where Microsoft will show a few devices running Windows Phone 7.

October 21st will be the day when retailers will get a wide range of Windows Phone 7 devices in at least UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. No word if these countries will be the only ones that get WP7 on October 21st.

BTW, I will attend a Windows Phone 7 and Silverlight event here in Finland on October 30th. I will let you know if I learn anything new and interesting there :)

Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg told in the video above that Sony Ericsson is in for a big surprise in the next few months. Not sure what they mean with this, but it could mean that they will bring a Windows Phone 7 device later this year.

Sony Ericsson also told last week that they will skip Symbian in favor of Android, and other mobile operating systems.

Windows Phone 7

According to a business paper in Germany, we will see Windows Phone 7 devices on October 21st. This should at least be the case in Germany. The OS itself will be launched at en event in New York on October 11th.

Only 1 month till we see Windows Phone 7!
