Engadget got hold of an image and specs of a pretty amazing HTC device. This superphone is currently known as the HTC Zeta. The image above shows a device that will come with a quad-core 2.5 GHz APq8064 Snapdragon S4 CPU, 1 GHz RAM, a 4.5-inch 720p display, 32 GB internal storage, Beats Audio, Bluetooth 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear camera with a dual LED flash, 1080p video, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The battery is said to be 1,830 mAh in capacity.

Expect to see this released in late 2012, or early 2013. This is so far the only leaked smartphone with a quad-core CPU. How would it feel to have a more powerful processor inside your smartphone than on your desktop? ;)

Qualcomm announced today that they’ll rename their Snapdragon processors. Current Snapdragons have a model name of MSxxxx, and no-one really knows what MS processor their phone or tablet is running. The new naming scheme will divide the Snapdragons in four like this:

  • S1 is for mass market smartphones
  • S2 is for high performance smart phones & tablets
  • S3 is for multi-tasking & advanced gaming
  • S4 is for next generation devices
So basically, a higher number means a better CPU. This move will make it easier for phone manufacturers to differentiate the devices, and ultimately make the consumer choose a more fitting phone.

Both the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S runs at a clock speed of 1GHz. It doesn’t mean that they are equal tho, the chips are made by different manufacturers. The Hummingbird chip inside the Galaxy S is developed by Samsung, while the Snapdragon processor inside the HTC Desire is made by Qualcomm.

As you can see from the video above, the Humminbird dominates the Snapdragon in 3D game performance, even though they both run at 1GHz. The game seen on the video is Quake 2.

Qualcomm has started shipping the first Snapdragons with a dual-core. The currently shipping version runs at 1.2GHz.

The currently shipping MSM8260 and MSM8660 solutions for mobile handsets deliver a new level of mobile multimedia performance, including:

  • Scorpion 1.2 GHz processor and 600 MHz DSP for high levels of web application and multimedia performance
  • Support for innovative 3D/2D user interfaces and console-quality gaming via dedicated, high-performance graphics engines
  • 16 megapixel camera
  • Full 1080p HD video playback and recording
  • Support for DTS/Dolby 5.1 surround sound
  • Integrated Assisted-GPS, including support for Glonass satellite services
  • Support for stunning 24-bit WXGA (1280 x 800) displays
  • 45nm process technology for ultra-low power consumption

Guys over at XDA-developers have found some interesting info about a coming Windows Phone 7 phone possibly called HTC Mondrian. The image above is extracted from the oemavatar.cab file inside the leaked Windows Phone 7 OS ROM. This could be used for instance to show a picture of the HTC Mondrian when you connect it to your computer, or then it could just be a general WP7 image. Here’s a list of what is currently speculated to be the Mondrian:

  • 1.3GHz QSD8650A/B Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm
  • 4.3″ WVGA display from Optrex
  • Digital Compass
  • No physical keyboard

Keep in mind that nothing has been proven yet, and these specs just came out of the leaked ROM.

Hope to see more of the coming WP7 phones soon.

In an article in yesterdays Helsingin Sanomat, Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm talks about their co-operation with Nokia and what it will bring us. Currently, the only Nokia device to have a Qualcomm chip inside, is the Nokia Booklet 3G.

According to the article, we will see a Symbian powered device by Nokia that runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. This is the same chip that for instance the Google Nexus One is using. These new phones will be targeted at North-American markets, where Nokia is currently facing the strongest competition. This Windows Phone 7 Series phone should hit the market before Christmas.

Another interesting fact from the article, is that Nokia will next time announce new smart phones in March 2010.
