Nokia N9 PR1.3

Nokia N9 PR1.3 hint

We wrote yesterday that Nokia is preparing to release PR1.2 for the N9 in the very near future. Now, Director for Applications for MeeGo at Nokia has tweeted that we’ll also see PR1.3 released soon after PR1.2. When asked about the date for PR1.2, he tweeted that it could hit on the “one extra day of the next month”, meaning February 29 :)

MeeGo users out there can soon celebrate with the release of software version dubbed PR1.2. The update has just started going out to registered N950 developers. It should take roughly a month before the final update will hit N9 owners out there.

We will be shortly releasing a developer edition of MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan 1.2 beta (feel free to crack a joke v 1.2 here) to developers with Nokia N950 Developer Device. The goal of this early access release is to enable developers to verify that their applications do not exhibit any regressions in the new platform version.

This release will be available as a one-click-flasher for Nokia N950 Developer Device. In other words, in order to participate in this beta you need to already have a Nokia N950 Developer Device.

First evidence of Nokia N9′s firmware version 22.2011.44.2 appeared today on Navifirm. This usually happens right before the firmware is officially pushed to end-users. What firmware is this? Could this be PR1.2 that everyone is waiting for? Just for the record, PR1.1 is v20.2011.40-4. Keep on waiting!

White Nokia N9

Glossy White Nokia N9 64GB

Nokia used their Conversations blog to announce that a glossy white color alternative of the Nokia N9 is on its way. All of the other colors are matte, so this is a nice new addition to the N9 collection! The new color will arrive by the end of this year. First up for delivery is the 64GB version, followed by the smaller capacity options.

They also wrote that a software update is in its finishing stages, meaning that we’ll see PR 1.2 released before the end of this year.

Changes in PR1.2:

The update includes usability improvements, like music controls keys from the lock screen or closing apps by swiping them down by default and NFC tag reading is also added.

Great work!

There are a few of you lucky users out there who have a Nokia N9 in their hand now. Most of you are running PR 1.0 as of now. The PR1.1 update has been rumored to hit in the very near future. The update is said to bring updated swipe functionality, improved boot speed, Chinese language support, and so forth.

Now we have an image of a Chinese Nokia N9 running PR1.2. This could be the Chinese alternative of PR1.1, but we can’t really say for sure. What we can say, is that the update is coming for sure! Stay tuned!

Here’s a video comparison of Symbian^3 PR 1.2 versus Symbian Anna (previously S^3 PR2.0). Alex from blog-n8.fr has both OS version running side-by-side on two Nokia N8s.

Nokia C7 Official

There’s a post over at Nokia Discussions indicating that PR1.2 is now live for the N8-00, C7-00 and C6-01.

Here’s the post from Nokia:

We have released a voluntary software update for Nokia Symbian^3 smartphones primarily to address a synchronization issue identified in a limited  number of Nokia smartphones using Mail for Exchange on Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Service Pack 1.

We listen to people’s feedback and continue to constantly improve the user experience of our smartphones with software updates.  While we are working to make available the next software version, which will provide a renewed user experience, including new browser, refreshed widgets and home screen as well as many other performance enhancements, we released this software to quickly resolve a potential issue affecting our business users.

The software update will be available through the on-the-device Software Update or using Ovi Suite. The roll-out schedule will be determined operator by operator, market by market.

Q:  What is new with this software update? What are the benefits?
A:   The primary reason for releasing this update is to address a Mail for Exchange synchronization issue. It will also include a new version of Ovi Store as well as a new version of Ovi Maps (SR6), adding visibility to subways, trams and trains, real-time traffic, safety alerts, visibility to parking and petrol stations, speed limit warnings, and improved search and location sharing capabilities.
Q: How can I update the software on my Symbian device?

A: Go to Applications > Software update or Applications-> Tools –> Software update (depending on which model you have) on your device and download the update there over the air. You can use WiFi to avoid any additional data costs. It’s also possible to update software via Ovi Suite. (As for all electronic devices we recommend to do regular backups in case you need to restore your data.)

Q: Will the software update be pushed to users?

A: No, this is a voluntary software update. Users who have signed up with MyNokia or enabled the software update auto-check will get a notification about the update on their homescreen and will be able to download the new software from the Software updater in their device, if and when the update is available for them.

Q: Why does the Symbian device variant in country X not have the SW update yet? What is your roll-out schedule?

A: We first publish standard non-customised versions of the software. Country (SIM-free) and operator versions will be following soon. You can check if an update is available for you from Nokia Care.

pS: As this is an optional release we have some countries & operators that are not taking this version!

Q: I’m on a SIM-locked device with operator X, they are not offering the update. My MfE is not synching. What can I do?

A: We will offer this update content also as part of the PR2 software.

Q: How can I check if I have the latest SW?

A: Go to Applications > Software update (N8, E7) / Applications > Tools > Software update (C6-01, C7), on your device and see if there are any updates available.

Q: Is the rollout of PR2 affected by this?

A: We’ve announced we will introduce significant improvements for the Symbian UI during the first half of 2011. That schedule remains unchanged.

Q: You have promised a new SW with browser and portrait QWERTY. Why are those not available in this release?

A: We hope that consumers will be very excited as we continue to enhance our smartphone experience in 2011.  We are not stopping here but there are further improvements on the way.  We anticipate the software to be available in the summer.

Nokia just confirmed that the N900 will receive the long awaited PR1.2(V10.2010.19-1) firmware update today. UK users will receive the update today, followed by the rest of the world tomorrow on Wednesday 26th.

First up – new games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

Next are the improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

An additional update you will be pleased to hear about is portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customisable.

Sounds like a pretty neat update, and a must have for your Nokia N900 owners. Hit View Post to see a Video from Nokia Conversations.

Update: Full changelog added after the break.
