Here’s a video from Nokia Beta Labs showing Swype in action.

Nokia Beta labs today announced the availability of Swype for Symbian^1 devices.

To download Swype for your Symbian S60 5th edition, click here.

This seems to turn into a wear between phone manufacturers. Apple just posted the video above to their official Youtube channel. This time they show a Nokia N97 drop from 7 bars to 2.

Symbian Foundation posted a set of Symbian^4 UI screenshots on their Symbian Wiki page. The screenshots have now been removed from that page, but you can find them here after the break.

These images aren’t of course anything near final, but gives you an idea where Symbian is headed with its UI design. Symbian^4 looks like an mash-up of Symbian^3 (Nokia N8) and Symbian^1 5th edition (Nokia N97). Hit View Post to see the rest of the screenshots.

Silverlight Symbian

Microsoft today released a final version of Silverlight for Symbian (S60 5th edition) into the Ovi Store.

Nokia N97 mini v12.0.110

Together with the Nokia N97, also the N97 mini received a firmware update today. This will bring the version number up to 12.0.110, and I’d guess that it is also a bugfix release. Couldn’t find a changelog for this yet, but I’d guess it is at least near the same with the Nokia N97′s that I posted here.

Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 got a new firmware today. Firmware version 22.0.110 doesn’t bring any new features, but is mainly a bug fix release.

The update will be pushed as an OTA update first, and it will become available via Nokia Software Updated in due time.

Data package content, corrections or changes :

  • Corrections to TOP ~15 issues reported in the field
  • OTC cases fixed:
    • Wrong Cherry number used in Russia and Spain
    • “System error” displayed occasionally at first start-up. Reported e.g.  by Vodafone.

Genius cases fixed:

  • Contacts performance improvement:
    • #144324: Voice dialing not working when there are 2000+ entries stored in Contacts.
    • #134637: Phone prompts “Memory full” when searching for names

Localisation & language variant specific:

  • #154188: Message editor crashes and writing fails if predictive text input is On. (Arabic UI, v15 language variant)
  • #146139: Scrolling to left and right works the wrong way around in Photos – Captured when using Arabic UI
  • #147509: QWERTY keypad input does not work correctly with Calculator. (Chinese language variants: v19, v25, v26)
  • #139207: “Slide to Answer” localization error  (Hebrew)
  • #140654: Localisation error in Bluetooth Audio – “Set as (un)authorized”  (Czech)

Misc:

  • #141675: “Security module error” shown in display occasaionally at start-up
  • #147863: Occasionally device hangs and restarts soon after start-up.
  • #137558: Device keylock opens (although it shouldn’t) when dialing a number using a carkit. (CK-300, CK-600, also some non-Nokia, factory installed car kits)

Others:

  • Default Nokia tune is played as ringing tone for incoming calls instead of the one user has defined in Profile settings. Also sometimes device ahs stopped alerting for incoming calls. Both issues are now fixed.

Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and Nokia Research Center have collaborated to film a music video at Provinssirock in Seinäjoki, Finland.

25 Nokia N97s will be used to film the Disco Ensemble gig later today. This footage will later be used to mix up a music video for the band.

Participants will use Nokia N97 phones to take video during Lapko’s or Disco Ensemble’s concert. After Provinssirock each group will make their own video mix using the video clips they took during the concert. The video mixes that really kick ass will get published on bands’ social media sites.

Pretty cool concept if you ask me.

Nokia N97 just received a firmware update to version 30.0.016. No official changelog is yet available, but the update can be downloaded via NSU or the OTA feature on the N97. There is no need for backing up your data (though it is recommended) because of the UDP feature on your N97.

Nokia just released a new beta of the Nokia Messaging for IM.

Nokia Messaging for IM offers a desktop-like IM experience on your Nokia device.  You can stay in contact with your friends across multiple communities at the same time, easily switch between them and customize your status by community.  Highlights include:

  • Chat with your friends on the Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi communities.
  • (new!) Easily change your custom status, avatar (picture) and switch between conversations and communities with just a few taps on touch-based devices.
  • (new!) Preview new messages in the Chat home screen widget.  When signed in to multiple communities, the widget will cycle between them.  You can also change your presence within the widget itself.
  • See your friends’ avatars and set your own using the camera or an image from your gallery (for Windows Live Messenger (new!), Gtalk (new!) and Ovi communities).

The new touch-based beta client is available for the Nokia N97 mini and Nokia 97.  It has not completed a full testing cycle on the Nokia 5800 and Nokia X6 but has passed the early tests – so give it a try.
