The MeeGo Conference 2011 is currently happening in San Fransisco, California. Many were expecting to see some interesting MeeGo hardware there, but at the time of writing this post, nothing has been released to the public.
However, Nokia N900 owners should be happy to hear that MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for the N900 is now available. For a download and installing instructions, head over to this page.
Skype has earlier told that they will make a “series of video-related announcements” at CES 2011. Now, they ‘accidentally’ leaked a help document that actually confirms video-calling on iOS, but what about the other platforms? Currently video-calling via Skype is only possible on the Nokia N900, but that isn’t considered mainstream enough. The fact that Skype has told that they will make a series of video-related announcements could mean that they will simultaneously launch it on iOS and Android (and possibly even WP7?). We’ll know more next month when CES 2011 kicks off.
The Nokia N900 could very well be the most hackable phone available. Several versions of Android have so far been ported to the device, and now we have working port of Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread. This was again accomplished by Alexey Roslayakov from the NITDroid team. A few bugs still need to be ironed out, but for instance WiFi, 3G and sound are already working. They expect to get a 2.2.1 stable released before Christmas, and an experimental 2.3 released before New Year’s Eve.
MeeGo v1.1 for Handsets and Netbooks was released today. This enables you to download it and install it on for instance your Nokia N900!

The Nokia N900 received firmware PR1.3 yesterday, and it brought us support to dual-boot the phone with Maemo and MeeGo.
Now the official MeeGo Wiki has gone forward with this, and posted a how-to guide on instaling MeeGo and U-Boot on the Nokia N900.
Due to various kexec problems and a lack of btrfs filesystem support in the Maemo kernel, the only way to dual boot Maemo and MeeGo currently is to chain-load kernels from an initial boot. For this we use u-boot, which is a capable and cross-platform bootloader. Once u-boot is flashed onto the device, at first boot it looks for a bootable vfat partition & image on the SD card. If it finds one, it boots that (MeeGo), if it does not, it boots Maemo as normal. This is not destructive to either operating system but as it does involve replacing the default boot kernel on the device it is only recommended for those who know how to recover their device if it goes wrong.

The Nokia N900 just received a new software version, which is now 20.2010.36-2. This is not the rumored PR1.3 release that will eventually enable the N900 to dual-boot into MeeGo, but just a minor software bump that will enable Ovi Suite and speed up the device in general. Correction, this is PR1.3 and actually has dual-booting support built in. There was never talk that the firmware itself would contain the needed MeeGo files, but to just bring the option of this. Sorry about that :)

This software release brings Nokia Ovi Suite support to your device. With Nokia Ovi Suite, you can easily back up and synchronise files and messages between your device and PC. There are also many performance improvements that make your device run more smoothly. To get this software through your device, select Applications > Software Update, and choose the software you want to update. Alternatively, this software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.
Nokia’s Stephen Elop just confirmed that we will not a see MeeGo device this year. What he said is pretty straight forward, “First MeeGo device will be a 2011 event”. The same has also been confirmed by an Intel exec earlier this month.
What about the recent post on the MeeGo blog then? They sort of promised us a dual booting Nokia N900 before the end of this year when PR1.3 is released for the N900.
