Nokia N8 Dark Grey

When PR1.1 was officially released for the N8-00/C7-00/C6-01 last week, we only had  a partial changelog to give to you. This has now changed, and we know a little bit more of the update.

Upgrades and additions:

  • Social 1.2 – photo and video upload improvements, though 1.3 is now available as a patch to this
  • Ovi Store 2.0 preloaded – direct access, no launcher anymore
  • New Ovi Maps data (#25) – bringing new navigable countries, though note that this is still v3.4.
  • Quickoffice 6.4.166, with free editing licence on the N8, and improved zooming functions
  • Adobe Reader updated to 2.5.653
  • Web updated to 7.2.8.10, minor fixes
  • Big update to Nokia Email; performance improved; ‘unread emails’ flag added to homescreen widget; meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations; maps integration, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite
  • Multiple general performance improvements
  • Dialler now works in landscape mode
  • Landscape qwerty layout altered to promote ‘@’ character
  • New music player screensaver (shows track name and cycles colours)

Fixes:

  • Charging indicator keeps going up when you disconnect charger under some circumstances
  • Battery indicator algorithm tweaked to be more linear (i.e. the old ‘six bars and then it dies ten minutes later’ syndrome is hopefully banished)
  • Problem with video streaming from web sites
  • SMS message stuck in outbox
  • MMS messages fail to send and get stuck in outbox
  • Device does not restore all settings after retuning from power saving mode
  • Screen image sometimes corrupted when you scroll up/down in Quickoffice
  • Minor N8 charging issues
  • Music player and Photos issues
  • Set “save sent messages” as ‘No’, but actually they still get saved.
  • Breathing light now optimised to ‘breathe’ only when screensaver is set to none or the phone is in powersaver mode
  • Animated screensaver option removed
  • Charging indicator erroneous when charging with power off
  • Web browser crashes when encoding is set to “Thai (TIS-620)”
  • Problem with National Geographic ‘web TV’
  • Phone freezes when you insert the letter É inside a Social network
  • All Widgets disappear after updating Social network and you set “Thai” UI

Some user in Italy has apparently gotten their hands on a N8 with PR1.1 on board. The firmware is dated January 7th, which means that it could currently be subject to heavy testing. Let’s hope this will be released soon enough!

Nokia N8

Nokia Sweden commented on their Facebook page that the bigger N8 update will arrive later this spring. MyNokiaBlog was the first to spot this. According to their Google Translator skills Nokia posted this comment:

Hi Matt! As Marcus says, a new software (PR 1.1) in February. A major update will be done later in the spring, but the time is still undetermined.

So, we will see the smaller PR1.1 update in February, but the bigger (possibly PR2.0) update is now delayed till ‘late spring’. Late spring in Sweden could actually mean anything between February and May, but I don’t think we will see it in February. So we will most probably see PR2.0 in March the earliest. PR2.0 is said to contain the new and improved browser.

I just eyed through the Nokia Sweden’s Facebook page, but couldn’t find any more info. The original message also appears to have been removed from there.

Here’s a pretty cool entry in the Nokia N8 Producers contest. Guy filmed this whole thing with his Nokia N8. The camera on the Nokia N8 is truly incredible.

On a side note, I can confirm that the winter really looks like that here in Finland now. Last night it snowed 29cm here in Vaasa, Finland. I had a hard time digging out my car in the morning! :)

Nokia N8 PR1.1

The Nokia N8 is about to get updated to PR1.1, aka version 013.015. This is not the major update that will bring the new browser and the promised 50+ features, but it still is an update that will bring performance and stability improvements. A Navifirm release usually means that we will see the official release in the near future.

PR1.1 is dated January 7th, 2011, so today it is exactly one week old. We could see the N8 officially updated during the following few days. Just keep on waiting! :)

Edit: Apparently it has now been removed from Navifirm. Could mean that is is back in testing, or then that it will be released soon. More info later :)

According to analyst firm Independent Equitu Research, sales of the Nokia N8 have been very strong. They don’t have exact sales numbers, but they base their analysis on several factors around the Nokia N8. According to them, the Nokia N8 has sold between 3.5-4 million units during Q4. They get this number by analyzing component manufacturers reports, the publicity stunts with the N8, overall mobile sales during this quarter and the fact that Nokia recruited 200 new workers to their Salo factory in Finland. One of their strategies is to analyze search engines and what people are actually searching (Google Trends). By using this tactic they’ve successfully estimated the sales of for instance the iPhone 3GS in 2008 when it was released.

In the image above you’ll see search trends for the Nokia N8, Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire. The image shows data from the past 4 months, from September to December 2010. You can see that the Nokia N8 is almost equal with the HTC Desire, and both of these are above the Samsung Galaxy S.

Highest sales of the Nokia N8 come from Finland, India, United Arab Emirates and Malaysia.

Nokia N8 Firmware Update

Nokia India today revealed that N8 users should see a new firmware for their phones in January 2011. They didn’t care to reveal what this update will bring, but it could be the update that will bring the new browser on board? Only one month left guys! I know you can do it! :)
