Sprint released a new ROM for their Hero earlier today. The new version is just a minor software update, pumping up the software version to 2.27.651.6 (from 2.27.651.5). No official word on what this update brings, but initial reactions show that it will speed up your phone a bit. Comments on other blogs shows that overall performance increases and for instance the dialer should be more responsive after the update.
To update, do the following on your phone and follow the on screen instructions: About Phone > System Updates > HTC software updates.

HTC released the long awaited Android 2.1 update for their Hero (GSM version). The update is currently available in Taiwan, the home country of HTC. No word if this update will also be available in Europe, but there shouldn’t be a problem with this since they use the same GSM bands in Taiwan and Europe, so the device should also be same. This of course isn’t the case with carrier customized Hero’s, owners of them still need to wait until the carrier of choice decides to update your Hero.
If you can’t wait for the update to arrive, you should give VillainROM a try.
Update: The version of your Hero after the update should be 3.31.751.1.

The HTC Hero is still running the now outdated Android 1.5 OS. There has been numerous rumors on when it will receive an update to Android 2.1, and now it again appears that we have a new date for the update. This time the info has leaked from Best Buy’s internal news, and states that Sprint’s HTC Hero will receive the update on Friday, May 21st.
There have been some questions about this update. It is a firmware update. Due to changes made by H……. again, the deployment was delayed. The update will be in all stores by Friday, May 21st.
We’ll know for sure this on Friday :)

A Sprint HTC Hero ROM leaked today. There’s no way of knowing if this is a near final release of Android 2.1 for HTC Hero. What we do know, is that the 124.1MB file was created May 14th, so it’s a new build. Remember to make a full backup of your phone if you decide to continue with the update. Good luck! :)

A few days ago we posted about a leaked Sprint document stating that their HTC Hero would see the long awaited update to Android 2.1.
Today, we have bad news for you again. Sprint’s forum admin has now removed the post where this info appeared, and commented it as follows: “Closing this thread because I don’t want folks to think that 2.1 is coming out on the 7th.”. So there it is, highly possible that we won’t see Sprint’s HTC Hero updated to Android 2.1 today.

The LOOOONG awaited Eclair update (Android 2.1) for the HTC Hero could be coming on May 7th. There has been numerous rumors about when this update will come, and all have been proven to be false. Now there is a new picture from a BestBuy internal document, showing that Sprint HTC Hero users will see Android 2.1 on May 7th. The update should be available via HTC’s site, and not as an Over-The-Air update.
Maybe the rest of the world will soon follow? Stay tuned!
