Motorola Droid’s Android 2.1 update – Changelog released

Motorola updated their support page to show what the upcoming Android 2.1 update for Droid will bring along.

The update should be available later this week.

Motorola Droid’s next update to be Android 2.1

Engadget has received intel that Verizon is working on an Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid. No info yet on when the update will be available. Here is what they have to say about the update:

  • It’s based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
  • Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
  • The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren’t really expecting that.
  • Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
  • No active wallpapers. Bummer!
  • The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices with minimum performance benchmarks?
  • Nexus One sold 80,000 during its first month

A report from Flurry shows that the Google Nexus One sold only 80,000 units in its first month. We earlier reported that they sold 20,000 during the first week, so exactly one fourth of the whole months sales. Nexus One’s sales are quite bad if you compare them to the first months sales of the iPhone or the Droid. The Motorola Droid sold 525,000, and the first generation iPhone sold 600,000 during their first month.

One of the reasons for this, could be that the Nexus One isn’t carrier bound, and only sold by Google. Also, Google didn’t advertise the phone much. If you think back in time on the announcement/release of the first iPhone, you can maybe remember the crazy Apple hype that went on. It was almost like everyone was crazy about this phone. Same thing was done with the Motorola Droid. Crazy Ad campaigns and hype around the launch.

Android display comparison – Six android phones compared in video playback

This isn’t the comparison we wrote about a few weeks ago(the one with the accuracy test), but a HD-video test where you see the quality on six different Android phones. Phones included in this test: T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone / Droid, Acer Liquid, Google Nexus One and Samsung Galaxy.

Check out the video after the break and decide for yourself.

    Motorola Droid at 1.1GHz

Folks over at AllDroid has successfully squeezed a “little” more our of the Motorola Droid CPU, which normally runs at 600MHz. They’ve made it to run at 1.1GHz, but apparently not that smoothly. They found that 800MHz is enough for this thing to run at, without it being too energy hungry, or a crash test dummy.

Motorola Droid getting a minor OTA update

Motorola Droid is getting a small OTA update as I write. No info on a changelog yet.

Motorola Shadow is going to be Nexus Two?

According to a post on Engadget, Motorola Shadow will be renamed into Google Nexus Two. The phone is basically a Motorola Milestone/Droid, but with a white QWERTY-keyboard and with a wrist strap. One more picture after the break.

Web browser test: Motorola Droid, iPhone 3GS, Nokia N900, HTC HD2, Nokia N97 mini, BB Storm and Palm Pre

A pretty basic browser speed test between the Motorola Droid, iPhone 3GS, Nokia N900, HTC HD2, Nokia N97 mini, Palm Pre and BlackBerry Storm. The iPhone 3GS is still the fastest, while the HTC HD2 comes in at second place. The only one I’m missing from the test is Google’s Nexus One.

Capacitive touch screen battle: iPhone, Droid, Nexus One and Eris

Here is a test to show the accuracy on four different capacitive touch screens. Phones used in the test are the iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid and the newest of them all, the Google Nexus One. Check out the video after the break!

Multitouch features of the Milestone ported to Droid

Something that all Droid users in the states are waiting for, is multitouch to possibly be ported to their Droids. The European version, Motorola Milestone, has full multitouch implemented in its software. Now the guys from AllDroid has made a port of the default browser, to the Motorola Droid. Check out the video and download info after the break. The port is still in beta, so be careful while updating.

Nexus One vs iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid

iSmashPhone has put together a spec/feature comparison of the Google Nexus One, iPhone 3GS and Motorola Droid. Check out their work after the break.

    droid-update-sm

Verizon has posted info on how to update your Motorola Droid to Android version 2.0.1. The download is 10.2MB, and should take 6-10 minutes to update.

Just like to image above tells, head over to www.verizonwireless.com/droidsupport for the download. Change log after the break.

    Motorola Milestone now official

    Motorola-O2-MileStone

Motorola today made the Motorola Milestone official. It will be Europe’s version of Motorola Droid. We earlier today reported that it will be feature-wise the same as the Droid, but I have to apologize and tell you that I was wrong :) This version will differ from the Droid in a few very good ways.

It will have a GSM-radio chip, instead of the CDMA-chip. Then, it will also support multi-touch gestures, like the pinch-to-zoom seen on for instance the iPhone. It is weird why this feature isn’t seen on it’s USA version, but I’d guess that the relationship between Apple and Google has something to do with. And the third big thing that differs these two, is the lack of Google Maps Navigation, since it’s not available outside of USA.
