Nokia Conversations interviewed Adam Mirabella, Global Director of Ovi Music services, on the recent changes in the Ovi Music Unlimited service. We yesterday broke the news that Nokia has decided to discontinue their Ovi Music Unlimited service in the majority of countries where it currently is available.

Nokia has decided to sack their Ovi Music Unlimited (previously Comes With Music) service. The Ovi Music store will however continue after this, but the 1-year license service will be discotinued. This is the case with OMU in Finland, but who knows if this will also be the case in other countries.

Here is how the Ovi Music Service change will affect customers:

  • New OMU bundled devices will not be shipped from Nokia’s factory after 31.12.2010
  • The 1-year lisence can’t be renewed after 10.1.2011
  • No effect on devices bought with OMU/CWM. These can still be activated for the 1-year free music download service.
  • No change for users who already have activated the license. When their current license expires, they’re not provided with an ability to renew the license.
  • No change in the Ovi Music store

So long Ovi Music Unlimited / Comes With Music! Personally I think that the only device that sold good with the CWM  bundle was the Nokia N97 mini when it was released. However, this was only due to the fact that you couldn’t buy it without the service.

Update: Reuters just reported that Nokia shuts down OMU/CWM in 27 countries. They will continue to sell phones with 12-month subscription to free music downloads in China, India and Indonesia and with 6-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

Nokia today announced the availability of their Comes With Music service in China. The cost of this service is the same as in other parts of the world, which is around 140€ for a 12 month contract.

The only thing that differs from the rest of the world, is DRM-free music! The Chinese Comes With Music(‘Yue Sui Xiang’ in China’) is the world’s first CWM service without DRM-tags. Let’s hope this will also be done in other parts of the world.

Nokia India has leaked what appears to be a re-branding of their service currently known as Comes With Music. The new service will be called Ovi Music Unlimited.

Apart from the change of the name, everything should continue to work as before.

Nokia yesterday announced the Nokia 5235 Comes With Music phone. It will have a 3.2″ resistive touchscreen, 2MP camera, 3.5mm audio-jack and a full set of their Ovi suite – including Ovi Share, Ovi Contacts, Ovi Store and Ovi Maps with pedestrian and drive navigation.

Some sites are reporting that this thing will basically be a Nokia 5230, but without navigation? According to Nokia Conversations this thing will be EXACTLY like the Nokia 5230, sans Ovi Maps and navigation.

What makes this product interesting is the price. With a recommended price of 145€ before taxes and subsidies. That would mean that it is 176.9€ in Finland for instance, where the cheapest CWM phone, Nokia 5130 CWM, is today priced at 195€.
