Samsung Galaxy S III i9500

Samsung Galaxy S III i9500

Here’s something that came to disturb my Christmas Eve – a render of the Samsung Galaxy S III! The Galaxy S III, or i9500 Universal, could possibly be the first device to dual-boot into Android and bada OS.

The Galaxy S III comes with a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED 1280 x 720 pixel display, 9mm thick body, 12 megapixel camera with both LED and Xenon flash. On the front we have a 2-megapixel camera. The Galaxy S III will be available with 32 or 64GB internal memory, expandable with a microSDXC card. Connectivity is ensured by a 4G LTE radio and USB 3.0. The CPU again is Samsung’s own quad-core Exynos 4412 running at 1.5GHz.

bada 2.0 features

bada 2.0 features

Samsung recently announced their first major update to bada with the introduction of bada OS 2.0. The update was told to reach every single bada device out there, but now plans have changed.

The company explained in an email to bada developers that they will not provide bada OS 2.0 for the Wave 525 and Wave 533. These two devices will continue with the bada 1.1 SDK. Developers who want to use features from the bada 2.0 API can not target the Wave 525 or Wave 533.

Samsung will however provide a Value Pack for those left without bada 2.0. The value pack will give bada 1.1 devices an experience similar to bada 2.0. Here is Samsung’s definition of a Value Pack:

Samsung is offering “Value Pack” upgrade for devices that do not support bada 2.0 upgrade due to hardware limitations such as main chipset performance and available network speed. “Value Pack” is designed to offer the same bada 2.0 user experience and service as much as possible despite the hardware limitations.

Samsung Wave - S8500

Samsung posted two interesting tweets last week. They give us an idea on when to expect Bada 1.2 for European SIM-free Waves (S8500).

The first tweet looks this:

bada 1.2 Firmware update will be available early next year for European SIM free Wave first

And the second one:
Support for the rest of the world will follow during 1Q of 2011 with different update dates depending on the country and operator
So, Europe will first see the official bada 1.2 update on their Waves, and the rest of the world will follow sometime during 1Q2011.

bada-sdk-110

Samsung just released a new beta of their developer tools for bada OS. This new release is bada SDK 1.2b1, and will allow developers to target every Wave device available. Other features that were added:

  • Apps created from HTML/JavaScript or Flash SWF won’t need C++ coding to become native apps
  • Conditional app launch
  • Improved OpenGL/ES 1.1 and 1.2 Extension
  • Wi-Fi EAP support
  • Memory Leak Detector

Full changelog after the break.

Samsung Omnia 7 hi-res

Sitthichoke Nopchinabutr, head of mobile marketing in Thai Samsung Electronics’ Telecommunication Unit, had the following to say about Samsung’s plans for 2011:

Next year, Samsung will introduce 15 to 20 new smart-phone models using Android, Windows, and Brada operating systems. For every 50 smart phones using Windows, it will make 24 using Android and five using Brada.

Those number would mean that Samsung is really focusing on Windows Phone 7 next year, and very little emphasis on Bada. Samsung has previously said that they will focus on Android, and that bada will power their mid-range/low-range phones. Windows Phone 7 wan’t previously very high up on their list. I guess this has changed now, or then the head of mobile marketing in Thailand is one misinformed poor guy :D

Samsung Bada 723

Check out this gallery I shot of the new Samsung Bada 723 (GT-S7230). This is the newest contestant from Samsung to run on their own bada os, specifically bada OS 1.1. Hit View Post to see the gallery!

Samsung Wave 723

Samsung is doing a pretty good promotion for new Wave buyers – they’re offering free games! The first Wave device (S8500) is unfortunately not supported. The offer includes the following Wave devices, Wave 525, 533, 575 and 723.

If you have one of the devices mentioned earlier, you’ll be able to obtain a free copy of the following software: FIFA 10, Tetris Refresh, Spore Creatures, Assassin’s Creed II, DioDict French/English dictionary and Princess Magic Therapy e-book and SSkin theme series.

Please act as soon as possible, because FIFA 10, Tetris Refresh and Spore Creatures will be offered to 250,000 quickest downloaders, and Assassin’s Creed for 300,000 first downloaders. The rest of the apps are available for a limited time, which means that we don’t know when it will end :)
