As expected, Apple today announced the next iPhone generation, simply called iPhone 4. They also renamed the OS underneath, to iOS 4. This was maybe the biggest update that the iPhone has seen.
Here’s a short summary on the new features:
- 24% thinner than the 3GS
- 3.5″ screen with a 960 x 640 resolution (called Retina Display, highest pixel density on a phone)
- 328 pixels per inch
- 800:1 contrast ratio
- Apple A4 System-on-Chip
- 3G Talk time 7h, 3G browsing 6h, Wi-Fi browsing 10h, 10h video, 40h music, 300h standby
- WiFi 802.11n
- HSDPA 7.2Mbps down and 5.8Mbps up
- Two microphones for digital noise cancellation
- New tool: Gyroscope. 6-axis motion sensing!
- 5MP camera with new technology, LED-flash, 5x digital zoom
- 720p video at 30fps with led and tap to focus
- Front-facing camera
- FaceTime program for video calls over WiFi (carriers don’t allow it over 3G)
The new iPhone 4 comes in two colors, black and white. It will be available in US, UK, Germany, France and Japan on June 24th, and 18 other countries will follow sometime in July. The 16GB model will sell for $199, and the 32GB model will sell for $299 (both with a 2-year contract).
