Edit: Samsung Italy just confirmed that Samsung’s Windows Phones running WP7.5 will get updated to Windows Phone 7.8. More of it here.
I’ve never been too fond of the way Samsung has delivered updates to their Android devices. Samsung is on a mission to release a bunch of devices, but never really caring to support them for long. We’ve seen numerous Galaxy smartphones released that will never get updated. I’ve earlier thought that this was only limited to Android, but a release by Samsung Sverige (Sweden) confirms that Samsung is also lazy with their Omnia line of Windows Phones.
The chart above shows that the Samsung Omnia W will never go beyond 7.10.8107.7, which is today an old software version. It will not get updated to Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh, nor Windows Phone 7.8. Keep in mind that the Omnia W is not even a year old today!
People keep on complaining that Nokia will not update their current line of Lumia devices to Windows Phone 8, but “only” give them Windows Phone 7.8. WP8 needs newer hardware and hence will not come to current generations. However, WP7.8 does not require new hardware, and there should be no reason for Samsung not to provide WP7.8 to the Omnia W. WP7.8 is a massive update and should be made available to every Windows Phone out there!
This is yet another reason why a Windows Phone user should choose Nokia’s devices instead of Samsung’s. Nokia promises software updates for at least 18 months, while Samsung doesn’t even deliver software updates to devices that are 9 months old.Read more: via
