Nokia has used Carl Zeiss optics in their smartphones for the past seven years. Today the two companies announced that this partnership will continue into the unforeseeable future. I’m eagerly expecting more PureView kind of innovation to follow. Great!

Nokia and Carl Zeiss extend partnership to continue setting standards in smartphone imaging

Espoo, Finland - Nokia and Carl Zeiss today announced that the exclusive partnership between the two companies, which has resulted in some of the industry’s best camera smartphones such as the Nokia N8 and the Nokia 808 PureView, has been extended.

The Nokia 808 PureView, which starts rolling out in May, combines high-performance Carl Zeiss optics with Nokia developed algorithms and a super-high resolution sensor to set a new standard in high-end smartphone imaging.

“Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years.”

Michael Kaschke, CEO, Carl Zeiss AG: “When joining forces with Nokia in 2005, we wanted to push the boundaries of mobile photography. A new month equals a few posts regarding statistics. First up is Android’s version breakdown. It great to see that for the first time we can see decent numbers with Android 4.0.* Ice Cream Sandwich! This rise is mainly caused by the new heavyweight contestants like the HTC One X, together with the recent updates to a selection of Samsung, HTC and Sony smartphones.

Android 2.3 easily continues with their title of the most popular Android version. The second most popular is Android 2.2 Froyo, followed by Android 2.1 Eclair as the third most popular. And in the fourth spot we already have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich!

Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung Galaxy S3

SamMobile got hold of two rather interesting scoops today. First, they got hold of two images that are claimed to be of the Galaxy S3. The design on this is a bit different than what we’ve seen before. Whether this is of a development batch or a final batch, it looks legit. Contrary to previous leaks, this device has a 12-megapixel camera and a notification LED.

The second rumor for today is of a Samsung GT-I9800. The Galaxy S3 is expected to be GT-I9300, so a GT-I9800 should be better than this. SamMobile’s tipster said that “This is just the beginning,” without giving any more detail on this. I guess we’ll just have to wait till May 3rd for the final announcement.

Nokia continues to push out semi-regular firmware updates to their Lumia series. Now somewhere in the world, a new firmware of version 12072 is being pushed out to the Nokia Lumia 800.

This update is said to fix a volume-related bug caused by the previous update, some power management improvements, as well as to bring some improvements to the Camera app to automatically detect 50Hz or 60Hz flicker reduction. Keep on checking your phone’s update screen or fire up Zune on a regular basis to be amongst the first to download this update.
