Google’s Andy Rubin today used his Google+ account to announce that there are over 700,000 Android activations a day. That’s 486 devices every minute, or 8 every single second. That’s quite a large number of phones!

Oh, and those of you wondering what an activation is, here’s Andy Rubin’s explanation:

“We count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

When will Google hit 1 million devices a day? I’d give it a few months!

Windows Phone 7.5 logo official

Rumors have been flying around on when Microsoft decides to bring their next update to Windows Phone. It now appears that the next update, dubbed Windows Phone Tango, is set to be announced at CES 2012. That’s just a few weeks from now! While more details of the update are still lurking inside of Microsoft, we’re expecting to see support for LTE, smaller screens, and smaller chassis sizes.

While Tango is ‘just a minor’ update, the next big thing will be Windows Phone 8/Apollo. This is what Nokia has been talking about before. It is the first WP version where Nokia’s influence can be seen. We have no info on what will make its way into this update. Microsoft is currently targeting a release in mid-June 2012.

We certainly have a very interesting smartphone year ahead of us! Keep on reading the news!

Wall Street Journal today wrote that Microsoft and Nokia has recently been flirting with the idea of making a joint bid for Research In Motion. They cite the usual “people familiar with the matter”. What they failed to mention is where we are today with these talks. We don’t know if they ended, or if the companies are trying to push forward. It will be interesting to see how this rumor will continue its life.

Nokia Asha 300

Nokia Asha 300

The Nokia Asha 300 was targeted for emerging markets when it was announced. This is why it came as a small surprise when Nokia brought this device to Finland. Apparently this was a great thing since Markkinointi&Mainonta wrote today that Asha 300 has sold out in Finland. Retailers don’t currently know when the next shipment of the Asha 300 will arrive. The Asha 300 is retailing for roughly 100€ (with 23% VAT and without operator subsidies).

Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire owners are greeted with an update today. The new version is 6.2.1, and breaks rooting. Those of you who have a rooted Kindle Fire should obviously stay away from WiFi networks to avoid auto-updates. Another option is to install Cyanogen Mod to finally remove the auto-updates :) Apart from the root-account removal, the update brings smoother scrolling, password protected WiFi access and the ability to remove recently used items from the carousel.

BGR received intel from a trusted source that HTC is preparing to switch their smartphone strategy a bit in 2012. HTC will focus on quality instead of quantity. BGR’s sources told that HTC will be ‘shockingly quiet’ for most of the first quarter. The company will release fewer phones in 2012 when compared to 2011.

HTC is currently preparing a HTC Titan-like smartphone with a 4.7-inch screen and 4G LTE and Windows Phone and targeted for AT&T. The device is expected to release on February 5th, meaning a likely announcement should come at CES.

HTC is also working on an Android flagship called the HTC Elite. This would run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and come with Beats Audio. AT&T would also pick this device, and a suggested name is the “HTC Congressional.” The launch for this flagship device is currently scheduled for the first or second week of April.
