Neowin has learned that Microsoft will announce a new Windows Mobile edition on Monday at Mobile World Congress. The new version will be called Windows Mobile Starter edition, and will be based on Windows Mobile 6.
Named Windows Mobile Starter Edition the software will be targeted at OEMs building devices for new and emerging markets. Based on Windows Mobile 6, Starter Edition will come in two versions, one with Office Mobile and one without. Windows Mobile Starter Edition will also support 2G (GSM), 2.5G (EDGE, GPRS) and CDMA (Rev A, EV-DO Revision A) or TD-SCDMA. It’s not yet clear whether 3G (GSM) will be supported.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft is looking to broaden Windows Mobile licensing to a wider audience. Microsoft recently announced a partnership with MediaTek to drive growth in smartphone sales for emerging markets over the next 12 months. MediaTek has worked with Microsoft to couple its hardwarewith the Windows Mobile 6 software. Neowin believes this is one of many working relationships that Microsoft will form to push Windows Mobile 6 or Windows Mobile Starter Edition to emerging markets over the next year.

Jay Yarrow wrote in an article for Business Insider that Google is paying Apple $100 million a year for the default search engine deal on the iPhone.
Another interesting fact about Yarrow’s article, is that he basically kills the rumor about Apple entering the search business with its own Search engine.

Spotify for Symbian got updated today. Version 0.3.23 (64201) can be downloaded from m.spotify.com.
Along with several bug fixes this release includes:
Samsung has finally released the long awaited firmware update (JB1) for the i8910 HD phone. The update brings kinetic scrolling to most parts of the interface, and a faster web experience. The update is available via Samsung’s PC Studio 7. As with all Samsung updates, you have to make a full backup before continuing, since there is no user data protection, and the firmware will wipe clean all data on the phone. After the update you will be able to restore your files from the backup, but all applications will be lost.
Quite a good update, but there is one stupid thing. After the firmware, you only have 16.9MB free space on C:. This is nearly half of the amount that was before the update, and WILL cause users problems. Symbian will start to nag you when there is under 10MB free.
Check out the full changelog after the break.
There is a discussion going on over at Nokia Support forums and Maemo Talk, about the microUSB connector on the Nokia N900. According to the threads in there, the microUSB connector gets misaligned, or disconnected completely. Some of the users haven’t gotten this fixed via the warranty, while the others have. A statement from Nokia would help this.
The problem is that the microUSB connector is a surface mount part, so it’s just lead that connects the microUSB connector to the PCB. To solve this, the whole connector should be changed to a through-hole design, which means that the connector is sort of anchored to the PCB.
Read a thorough analysis of the problem here.
