Windows Phone 7.5 logo official

Windows Phone 7.5 Logo

Microsoft has shed some light on how the next generation Windows Phone, possibly going to be called Windows Phone 8, will run applications and games developed for Windows Phone 7.5. In short, it will run current generation games and applications. Microsoft detailed this in a blogpost yesterday.

With regard to existing applications: today’s Windows Phone applications and games will run on the next major version of Windows Phone. Driving application compatibility is a function of Microsoft’s commitment to its developers. Regardless of what we release in terms of new developer features and functionality, we have made a large investment in protecting your existing investments.

We’ve also heard some developers express concern about the long term future of Silverlight for Windows Phone. Please don’t panic; XAML and C#/VB.NET development in Windows 8 can be viewed as a direct evolution from today’s Silverlight. All of your managed programming skills are transferrable to building applications for Windows 8, and in many cases, much of your code will be transferrable as well. Note that when targeting a tablet vs. a phone, you do of course, need to design user experiences that are appropriately tailored to each device.

BTW, sorry for not posting yesterday. I was on a boat between Finland and Sweden and didn’t get WiFi on my computer. Now I’m safely back in Finland and can continue posting :)

Windows Phone Marketplace, March 2012

Windows Phone Marketplace, March 2012

AllAboutWindowsPhone has their own WP Marketplace tracking system in place and according to this database, the Windows Phone Marketplace has now reached 80,000 apps.

Here are some interesting stats AAWP released:

As of April 1st:

  • 82,234 apps
  • 20,327 publishers (developers)
  • Proportion of quality apps (rated five or more times) stable at 8%

Both the 80,000 apps and 20,000 publishers milestones, together with their respective growth rates, suggest the Windows Phone Marketplace is enjoying sustained and accelerating growth. It is now comfortably the third biggest mobile app ecosystem, behind Android (450,000+) and iOS (550,000+), but some way ahead of Blackberry (70,000) and Symbian (70,000).

The last few weeks has seen an increase in the number of apps being added (340 per day), when compared to February (average of 250 per day), but this is still slightly down from January’s high (average of 375 per day). Q1 2012 as whole (average 327 per day) is significantly higher than Q4 2011 (210 per day). This overall trend suggests that the combination of a maturing platform (Mango release) and the entry of Nokia into the Windows Phone ecosystem has had a very positive impact on the number of apps being published to the Marketplace.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 - Poster Template

Nokia Windows Phone 8 - Poster Template

A PhoneArena tipster sent a poster template that is said to be an internal Nokia template. There’s Windows Phone 8 branding together with a phone rendered in three colors. The image could of course just be a fake or a placeholder for something that is really coming. Nonetheless, if this is really from an internal document, then it would be safe to say that the next major version of Windows Phone will be branded as Windows Phone 8.

Nokia Lumia 800: Clean your lens before you take a picture!

Nokia Lumia 800: Clean your lens before you take a picture!

This is just a friendly reminder that you should really clean your lens before you take a picture with your mobile. The two pictures above are taken with a Nokia Lumia 800. The left pic is grabbed immediately after I took the phone out of my pocket, while the pic on the right is taken in the same lighting conditions, with the only difference being a cleaned lens.

I can’t believe how big of a different a cleaned lens will make! At first I was shocked by how poor the quality was. I thought that my phone was broken. After I fought with the settings for a while I concluded that this isn’t because of the settings, this has to be something else. Luckily, this problem was easy to fix. I just had to clean my lens!

Just remember to keep your lenses clean ;)

Android platform versions, March 2012

Android platform versions, March 2012

The Android market share (-ish) numbers for March, 2012, are here. The newest iteration of Android, version 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich, continues to rise. However, the pace for this is really slow. Android 4.0 now accounts for 2.9% of the install base, while a month ago ICS was at 1.6%. Another version that continues to rise, and actually faster than ICS, is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This is also the most popular Android version with a share of 63.7%, while a month ago it was at 62%.

What do you think? Will we see a faster adoption when Android 5.0 Jelly Bean is released? Android 4.0 was released almost 6 months ago, and it’s still rocking at only 2.9%. One could hope that the roll-out to the next major version will go a lot faster.
