An anonymous Android project member has confirmed that Android 2.3 will be a major release. The image above is captured from Google Android’s support forum, specifically from Issue 8804 which focuses on an enterprise WiFi auth problem.
I’d say this is Gingerbread’s version number, since a major release would mean that it can’t be Android 2.2.2. So there you have it now, Android 2.3 will be Gingerbread, confirmed by a Google engineer.
