Nokia C6 - Black

The brand new Nokia C6-00 got it’s first official firmware update today.

Depending on where you live, the update version is different. The Chinese version got update to version 10.2.24, North-American version to v10.0.24 and the European to version 10.0.21. Can’t actually verify these versions, since I don’t know anyone with a Nokia C6.

The update should be available via NSU, and as an OTA update in the coming few days.

As of writing this post, there is no official changelog available. Will update the post when/if I find one.

Symbian Foundation posted a set of Symbian^4 UI screenshots on their Symbian Wiki page. The screenshots have now been removed from that page, but you can find them here after the break.

These images aren’t of course anything near final, but gives you an idea where Symbian is headed with its UI design. Symbian^4 looks like an mash-up of Symbian^3 (Nokia N8) and Symbian^1 5th edition (Nokia N97). Hit View Post to see the rest of the screenshots.

Nokia today released new firmwares for four of their low-end devices. The following phones got a new firmware: 2710, 2730, 3710 and 6301. None of those phones have User Data Preservation, so you need to make a backup before applying the updates.

Changelogs and firmware versions

Nokia 2710 firmware version 06.21:

This software release provides support for a new Point me to feature in Maps. This feature gives you the option of navigating in a straight line towards your destination. If on foot, automatic map rotation makes this feature even easier to use. This release also provides general performance improvements. This software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.

Nokia 2730 firmware version 10.40:

This software release includes a new version of the Ovi Store application. In addition, there are improvements to usability and general performance. This software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.

Nokia 3710 firmware version 04.35:

This software release comes with enhanced video calling and general performance improvements. This software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.

Nokia 6301 firmware version 09.40:

This software release comes with general performance improvements. This software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.

The Nokia C6-01 leaked today on Nokia Netherlands’ site. The C6-01 is basically a C6-00, but with a better camera equipment. The camera gets an upgrade to 8MP and dual-LED flash (instead of 5MP and single flash). Also the back-cover got a slight style update. In my eye the new back-cover looks a little bit steel-y?

The Nokia C6-01 will be priced at 279€. No word on when this will be available. We’ll probably know more when there is an official Press Release available.

Mobile security firm NetQin has found a malware spreading on Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition devices. They estimate 100,000 infected devices, and say that they could be used to build a mobile botnet. The malware could be used to send SMS messages to users on your contact list, or then to a list specified by a server to seed numbers to the infected phones. The SMS messages wouldn’t appear on the Sent messages list, nor the SMS Log.

The malware has been spread by infected games and special offers. Symbian Foundation has reacted by removing the infected games/apps Symbian Signed certificates.

OK, pictures of the X2, C3 and C6 dummys at least :)

Dummy phones of the Nokia C6, X2 and C3 arrived today to my workplace. This means that they aren’t far away from being released here in Finland! You can’t tell much from a dummy phone; just the size, weight and look.

The Nokia C6 looks really good, can’t wait to get my hands on the final product!

Opera Mini 5.1 - More than 3000 phonesOpera Software today announced the availability of Opera Mini 5.1. To download Opera Mini 5.1, direct your current mobile browser to the following URL: http://m.opera.com.

This update is highly recommended for users of Nokia S40 feature phones with limited memory, such as the popular Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 6300 and Nokia 2700 handsets. This upgrade will also benefit phones with a small screen size, such as the Sony Ericsson K550i and Sony Ericsson W810i phones. In addition, Opera Mini 5.1 will improve the browsing experience for those who have encountered out-of-memory issues or the need to reload open web pages while surfing with Opera Mini 5. The update is not critical for Opera Mini users on smartphones or high end devices.
