Sony (Ericsson) is expected to bring at least three high-end devices in 2012. So far we know model numbers and code names for at least three devices, the Nypon (LT22i), Nozomi (LT26i) and Aoba (LT28i). Until today Nypon was the only one that wasn’t leaked, but luckily it changed now.

The LT22i Nypon is Sony Ericsson’s first to come with a ST-Ericsson NovaThor dual-core chipset running. Sony Ericsson has earlier used the Qualcomm Snapdragon system on chip for their whole Android lineup. Another first for Sony Ericsson is the use of a qHD 540×960 pixels display.

Hit View Post to see three videos of Ice Cream Sandwich running on the NovaThor SoC. The board on the video is ST-Ericsson U8500 HREF+ 2.2 running at 1GHz with 512 MB RAM. We don’t know if the LT22i will use exactly this variant of the SoC, but the videos still give you an idea of how ICS will run on it.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi

Pictures of the Sony Ericsson LT26i, codenamed Nozomi, have leaked. So far the rumors give Nozomi the following specs:
  • 1.5 Dual Core CPU
  • 4.3-inch 1280×720 screen (320 DPI)
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Shoot full-res stills and 1080p video simultaneously
  • Front facing camera
  • Running Gingerbread 2.3.5

The Nozomi will probably be released with Android 2.3.5, and updated to Android 4.0 ICS shortly after the release.

We’re expecting to see the Nozomi announced at MWC 2012, and released in March thereafter. We don’t know if this device will be branded Sony, or Sony Ericsson. This device is still developed by Sony Ericsson, and not by Sony. The first Sony developed devices will see the light of day in late 2012.

According to Wall Street Journal, Sony is nearing a deal to buy Ericsson out from their 50-50 joint venture.

The story of Sony Ericsson started in 2001. Today the company is the sixth-largest mobile phone manufacturer. With this buyout, Sony aims to integrate their smartphones business with that of their current tablets, hand-held game machines, and personal computers to save costs and synchronize development of mobile devices.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Android 2.3.4

Yesterday we wrote that the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo is receiving Android 2.3.4. Well, it now appears that the whole 2011 line of Xperia phones are receiving the update in question. There have been reports of the Xperia Play and Xperia arc receiving it.

Sony Ericsson has also joined the Android 2.3.4 game by releasing an update to that version for the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo. They’ve brought a new version of Google Talk with video chat support and some Sony Ericsson customized features like a Swype-like keyboard, panoramic photo option in camera, screen capture and enhancements to their Facebook integration.

The update is currently rolling out in Scandinavia, but it shouldn’t take long before it hits other parts of the world. The rollout should be complete sometime in October.

Sony Ericsson today announced that they’ll release Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for every current generation Xperia device out there, including the Xperia arc and Xperia ray. There’s currently no word on when the update will actually arrive, but Eric Schmidt today hinted that the OS will be released sometime in October/November. As with other Android updates from Sony Ericsson, also this will take some time to prepare so I don’t think the final update will hit devices during this year.
