Nokia Siemens Networks announced today that they will cut 1,500 jobs from the former Motorola Solutions unit they acquired earlier in the year. The jobs will be cut from their GSM and WiMAX divisions. Some employees have been offered jobs elsewhere in the organization.

Qualcomm announced today that they’ll rename their Snapdragon processors. Current Snapdragons have a model name of MSxxxx, and no-one really knows what MS processor their phone or tablet is running. The new naming scheme will divide the Snapdragons in four like this:

  • S1 is for mass market smartphones
  • S2 is for high performance smart phones & tablets
  • S3 is for multi-tasking & advanced gaming
  • S4 is for next generation devices
So basically, a higher number means a better CPU. This move will make it easier for phone manufacturers to differentiate the devices, and ultimately make the consumer choose a more fitting phone.

Hi again!

Now I’ve finally finished the work on the new server. DNS records are being updated around the world as I write this. Everyone should be on the new server in the coming 72 hours. Please let me know if there is something you notice that is missing or behaving differently than before.

You can notice some hiccups during the first few days on the new server. I’ll optimize it further when I notice some slowness. Please subscribe to our RSS feed to be informed when there is something worth of reading :)

Best,

Jonne

Here’s a short teaser showing you the upcoming KDDI TS12T (manufactured by Fujitsu-Toshiba). The device is the first announced Windows Phone Mango device out there. We’ll see this released at the end of September.

We’re currently in the process of jumping to another server provider. The move should improve the page load speeds and uptime. We’ve experienced some downtime during the past one month, and this is the main reason for the move.

The move will take roughly a week to complete. The process shouldn’t affect how the site performs on the old host. Please sign up for our RSS feed to stay tuned on the process, and of course also the news we post!

I’ve now been almost a week on a vacation in Greece. The place is great! However, the Internet is one thing that isn’t great. I don’t have 3G connectivity anywhere, and I need to take my computer to a coffee shop for posts. To increase my pain over this site, it went down today in the morning. Since I wasn’t connected to the Internet, I didn’t get an warning about it being down. Due to this, the site was unreachable for roughly 6 hours. To decrease the possible for a future downtime, I will move this site to a new host when I come back to Finland. If you notice any additional downtime, please just try to come back later that day. I’ll still spend another week on the lovely island of Kefalonia, Greece.

Please follow our RSS feed or Twitter handles for updates whenever there is a new post! Stay tuned!

Greece Flag

I’ll be leaving to Greece in the couple of next few hours. The amount of posts is dependent on my Internet connectivity. It is highly possible that I wont be able to make daily posts, but I’ll still try to cover the most important news when I have some extra time on my hands.

NVIDIA Tegra Roadmap 2010-2014

NVIDIA’s mobile dedicated Tegra platform is now nearing its third release, with a product that is currently called Kal-El. Even though this isn’t available yet, work is already being done on Kal-El’s successor. A new NVIDIA mobile platform roadmap leak confirms a few interesting specs of Kal-El’s successor.

The leaked roadmap shows products called Wayne, Logan and Stark. We’ll see Wayne released in 2012, Logan in 2013 and Stark in 2014.

Wayne will come in two different versions. The chearper alternative will most probably come with four cores (Cortex-A15) running at a clock speed of 1,5GHz, and 24 GPU cores. The more powerful Wayne will come with eight CPU cores and 32-64 GPU cores. The cheaper alternative is targeted for use in smartphones, while the more powerful is targeted for use in tablets and low-power laptops.

The first Tegra 4 powered decives should see the light of day in October, 2012.

BTW, have you noticed from where NVIDIA takes their codenames from? From comic book superheroes! Kal-El is from Superman, (Bruce) Wayne is from Batman, Logan is from X-Men, and finally, (Tony) Stark from Iron Man.
