McDonald’s will install NFC (Near-Field-Communication) chip readers in their stores in the UK this summer. The investment will cost McDonald’s roughly £1.5 million, and will bring NFC readers to 1,200 McDonalds’ restaurants in the United Kingdom.

NFC will not completely replace chip-and-pin technologies (credit cards) due to security reasons. In McDonalds’ case the customer will not be able to use the NFC system if the purchase is over £15. Money and a credit card will do when shop for more than £15.

I think it’s extremely good that McDonald’s does this. Mobile World Congress is right ahead of us, and I’d say we will see many NFC enabled phones hit the markets real soon. The Nokia C7-00, and the Nexus S currently pack a NFC-chip inside. The C7-00 will however need a firmware update before it can be used.

Steve Jobs sure will like this news, the iPhone will be used to make an adult film!
Here is what the Associated Press had to say:
“When Apple Inc. launched the iPhone 4 and its FaceTime videoconference feature, it didn’t take long for adult-entertainment companies to develop video-sex chat services and start hiring workers through Craigslist.
With more than 3 million of the phones already sold, the adult industry stands to make big money on this new way to reach out and touch someone — even if it puts Apple, which has always taken pains to keep its iPhone apps squeaky clean, in an awkward spot.
In at least five cities, Craigslist ads seek models specifically for video sex chat on FaceTime. Many of the ads even offer to throw in a free iPhone 4 for the new employees”

I’m currently in the iPhone 4 queue in Vaasa, Finland. I’m the 8th person to arrive here. The local time is now 3:20, and they’ll start selling at 9:00.

Good timing since only the first 10 persons will get their beloved phone immediately, the rest will be delivered sometime in the future.
Happy queuing! :)

Rarely before has there been a technology that has progressed so rapidly and as ubiquitously as the communications technology that underpins the mobile phone. From the early days of the analogue mobile, through the introduction of digital technologies, 3G phones and high speed broadband, developments have happened at breakneck speed. Now the latest generation of phones, 4G, is being rolled out, available at all the leading retailers including dialaphone. In this short article we will look at some of the improvements we might expect from this latest innovation.

The name 4G refers the to Fourth Generation in mobile phone technology and it follows on from where 3G (third generation) technology left off. 4G encompasses Internet Protocol (IP) packet switched networks, gigabit broadband and multi mode carrier transmission.

For mobile phone users who are interested in experiencing substantial improvements in current 3G applications, for instance improved internet access, massively increased download and upload speeds and multi-media screening, as well as for the first time being able to enjoy true video chat and HDTV services, then they will find it all in 4G.

The first implementation of a 4G network was in Scandinavia in December 2009. This was not fully 4G but used what is known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, a technology that has been dubbed 3.9G. With this technology 100 megabits per second download speeds are possible, which is ten times that which is available on 3G. The beauty of LTE is that is can be overplayed on existing 3G networks which means that it can be implemented faster that the full 4G system as specified by the full IMT 4G requirements.

It will be this system that we will use when 4G handsets become available over the next few months and mobile phone enthusiast have speculated avidly over what these new handsets will offer; not surprisingly many rumours have circulated whilst the phone manufacturers have done their best to conceal their latest trade secrets. One thing of which we can be certain of however is that 4G will provide an entirely enriched experience in telecommunications: what was a science fiction fantasy just a decade or so ago will become an everyday experience, visit the site now for more info.

Hello everyone, and sorry for not posting any news yesterday. What was supposed to be a few hours visit to Latvia, turned out to be a three days worth of no internet. Now I’m in my hotel with WiFi, so you’ll get your news later today :)

I will tomorrow attend Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Developer Hub in Helsinki, so there won’t be as many posts as normally. I’ll post something in the morning and in the evening, but you won’t see any posts between 9am and 19pm.

I will let you know if I learn anything new and interesting at the event :)
