Seiko Epson today announced that they’ve agreed to pay Nokia $80 million to settle its part of a Nokia lawsuit over price fixing of cellphone LCDs.

Here is the full press release:

Settlement of Lawsuit and Announcement of Extraordinary Loss

– TOKYO, Japan, December 26, 2011 –

Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson,” TSE: 6724) today announced that it has agreed to settle for US$80 million civil lawsuits filed against it in the United States and United Kingdom by Nokia Corporation of Finland and its subsidiaries (“Nokia”) seeking damages stemming from purchases of liquid crystal displays.

1. Timeline

In November 2009, Nokia filed lawsuits in the United States and United Kingdom against Epson and its subsidiary companies including Epson Imaging Devices Corporation alleging violations of antitrust and competition laws. Epson has denied liability and vigorously defended the lawsuits. Because of the ongoing impacts of the lawsuits on its business and the expense of continuing litigation, however, the company has determined that settlement of the litigation is in Epson’s best interests.

2. Details of settlement

Epson will pay Nokia the sum of US$80 million in full settlement of Nokia’s claims, and Nokia will discontinue all related lawsuits filed against Epson and its global affiliates.

3. Impact on business results

Epson will, because of this settlement, post an extraordinary loss in its business results for the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2012. However, after evaluating factors such as recent business trends and prospects for extraordinary profits and losses going forward, Epson has decided to stand by its full-year forecast announced on November 14.

The image above can be a new ‘official’ render of the Nokia Lumia 900. It looks very much like the current Lumia 800, but when you take a closer look, it actually is more rounded at the bottom. Apart from this, every phone above does seem to have a front-facing camera in the upper left corner. The camera button has been placed higher up on this render, too.

What do you think? Is this the real deal?

Rumors have been flying around on when Microsoft decides to bring their next update to Windows Phone. It now appears that the next update, dubbed Windows Phone Tango, is set to be announced at CES 2012. That’s just a few weeks from now! While more details of the update are still lurking inside of Microsoft, we’re expecting to see support for LTE, smaller screens, and smaller chassis sizes.

While Tango is ‘just a minor’ update, the next big thing will be Windows Phone 8/Apollo. This is what Nokia has been talking about before. It is the first WP version where Nokia’s influence can be seen. We have no info on what will make its way into this update. Microsoft is currently targeting a release in mid-June 2012.

We certainly have a very interesting smartphone year ahead of us! Keep on reading the news!

Wall Street Journal today wrote that Microsoft and Nokia has recently been flirting with the idea of making a joint bid for Research In Motion. They cite the usual “people familiar with the matter”. What they failed to mention is where we are today with these talks. We don’t know if they ended, or if the companies are trying to push forward. It will be interesting to see how this rumor will continue its life.

Nokia Asha 300

Nokia Asha 300

The Nokia Asha 300 was targeted for emerging markets when it was announced. This is why it came as a small surprise when Nokia brought this device to Finland. Apparently this was a great thing since Markkinointi&Mainonta wrote today that Asha 300 has sold out in Finland. Retailers don’t currently know when the next shipment of the Asha 300 will arrive. The Asha 300 is retailing for roughly 100€ (with 23% VAT and without operator subsidies).
