Nokia 603 users should check their handsets to see if an update is available for it. Apparently there should be an update available that will update the Symbian Belle handset to software version 111.030.0607. There is not word of an official change log yet.

Nokia today told that the company is working on bringing two separate updates to fix power efficiency problems found on the Nokia Lumia 800. The first of the two will be delivered in roughly two weeks time. This will make improvements to power efficiency. The second update will be delivered in early January, and will increase the Lumia 800′s battery power from 1300mAh to 1450mAh.

Here is the full statement from Nokia Support:

We understand that some people have expressed concerns about battery life on the Nokia Lumia 800.  Early investigations show that most people are enjoying the full Nokia Lumia experience without any problems and we have not been able to identify a single root cause that would lead to erratic battery behavior at this stage.  A software update in early December will make some improvements to power efficiency, while a second update in early January introduces high voltage charging, increasing the Nokia Lumia 800’s battery power from 1300mAh to 1450mAh. These are scheduled improvements and will enhance the overall experience, but are not designed to address any issues that may be occurring with individual products.  We recommend that anyone who has concerns contact local Nokia care representatives at their earliest convenience.

There shouldn’t be any doubt on which company has helped evolve the mobile industry the most. The answer is Nokia. We’ve seen innovation after innovation created by Nokia. Nokia is currently sitting on a pretty large stack of patents related to the mobile industry, and practically everyone pays Nokia in royalties. The 5-minute video above is made to celebrate a whopping 25 years of innovation (and 25 years of me ;) ) from Nokia.

Great job, Nokia!

Nokia Lumia 601Still remember the leaked developer video which featured a still unannounced Nokia Windows Phone? Well, it now seems that this device was the Nokia Lumia 601, and not the Nokia Lumia 900 we were hoping it to be. The image above is courtesy of Pocketnow. They have leaked an immense amount of Nokia phones in the past, so I’d say this is legitimate.

The Nokia Lumia 601 is obviously running Windows Phone. The camera module however is a bit special on this one. It resembles the one we’ve seen on the Nokia C7-00. IF this is the same module, then we’re looking at the first Windows Phone smartphone with an EDoF camera. This means that auto focus is out of the question, and we’ll have a fixed focus camera instead.

Previously the hardware requirements of Windows Phone have not made hardware like this possible. The recent change in the hardware requirements changed this, and we’ll even see devices without a camera in the future.

Nokia is probably targeting a lower price point with the Lumia 601. The new leaks would suggest a release at CES or MWC. Stay tuned for more information on this!
