Skype now available in Ovi Store

Skype is now available for Nokia smartphones from the Ovi Store.

Over 200 million more of you around the world can now download a great, full-featured Skype app to your mobile phones.

It’s ready to download now from our website or from the Ovi store, and it does everything you’d expect a great Skype app to do. Mark explains all in the video above, but in short, you can:

  • make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world
  • save money on calls and texts with our low rates
  • send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
  • share pictures, videos and other files
  • receive calls to your online number
  • see when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
  • easily import names and numbers from the phone’s address book

You can call, text, IM and everything else whether you’re on a 3G or WiFi connection, so when you’re abroad, just pop in a local SIM card with an unlimited data plan – or find a WiFi zone – and you’ll be able to avoid those pesky roaming charges.

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform. Soon, we’ll update the app so that it works on Symbian mobiles from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.

This version of Skype for Symbian application is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.

And for those wondering where I am, and why I haven’t posted anything in a while. I’m on a short(three week :)) vacation in Thailand, and therefore haven’t had time to post anything. Vic has been able to post all the important bits of information during this time, but this is the reason why you don’t get 5-10 new posts every day.

I’ll be back in action on March 15th. Take care everyone!!

Firefox for Nokia N900 now available in the Ovi Store

Firefox for Nokia’s N900 is now available in the Ovi Store.

GLOBAL – N900 users rejoice, Firefox is ready to download directly from the Ovi Store. Officially released at the start of the month on the Mozilla website, the app has been working its way through the Ovi Store approval process and is now ready for N900 users to download.

This is a big leap for Firefox, as this sparks the first release of the full Firefox experience on a mobile device. There’s a ton of great functionality to get stuck into, and some new mobile-specific functions as well.

One of the best parts of Firefox mobile is the ability to sync with your desktop or laptop browser. Using the Weave Sync plugin, you can keep create a Weave account and keep all your browers in Sync. As Jay shows off in the video below, you’ll be able to pull up pages from your history on a mobile device, which you previously browsed on your desktop.

Nokia phone with Snapdragon onboard coming this year?

In an article in yesterdays Helsingin Sanomat, Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm talks about their co-operation with Nokia and what it will bring us. Currently, the only Nokia device to have a Qualcomm chip inside, is the Nokia Booklet 3G.

According to the article, we will see a Symbian powered device by Nokia that runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. This is the same chip that for instance the Google Nexus One is using. These new phones will be targeted at North-American markets, where Nokia is currently facing the strongest competition. This Windows Phone 7 Series phone should hit the market before Christmas.
