Google went ahead and released the source code for their latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich version, which is Android 4.0.3. The new version includes builds for the Motorola XOOM, Samsung Galaxy Nexus S, and two Galaxy Nexus versions (GSM and Verizon).

Some noteworthy items:

  • This version of Android is optimized for a wide range of devices. It works on phones. It works on tablets. It works on devices that don’t quite have the horsepower of a Galaxy Nexus.
  • From a straight AOSP, it works on Galaxy Nexus (the ones sold with mysid and yakju builds), on Motorola Xoom (US variants), and on Nexus S (all variants). Proprietary binaries will soon be available for those devices at the usual location.
  • Out of the box, this is the first time that AOSP works on 3 different device families, the first time that it works on tablets, the first time that it works directly on a device that’s neither an ADP nor a Nexus, and the first time that it works on Verizon devices.

Motorola Milestone 2

Motorola Milestone 2

Motorola used their Facebook page to tell the world that the company will start delivering Android Gingerbread to the Milestone 2. The update will go out in phases, so not every one with a Milestone 2 will receive it tomorrow. Just stay patient and hope to get it as soon as possible :)

Here is the post from Motorola Europe’s Facebook page:

News for Eueopean Motorola Milestone 2 owners. The upgrade to Gingergread will begin tomorrow, we will be rolling out in stages and so please watch this space for more information. Thanks!

Motorola Droid 4
Little have we heard of Motorola’s Android-based Droid 4 before. This changed today when specs and images of the device in question got out in the wild. It appears that the Droid 4 will be targeted for Verizon Wireless, and it will be the first Motorola device to utilize Verizon’s fast 4G network.

Basically the Motorola Droid 4 is a Droid RAZR, but with an added physical keyboard. Specs include a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 4-inch touchscreen, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording and HDMI out.

Rumors tell that this device will be released as soon as December 8th. So far there is no word on the pricing.

My Nokia Blog noticed that Damian Dinning, one of those behind the N8′s camera, is currently working on bringing a software update for the N9 and Lumia 800. He simply tweeted that he is working on a software update to both devices, but didn’t go into detail on what this will bring.

Damian Dinning’s tweet:

working on sw updates to both to improve performance, no further details for now.

We don’t have a date, or an estimate, on when this will be released, but it is still good to know that something is coming!

Motorola has just sent out invites to a media event they plan to hold on October 18. The invite is titled “MOTOROLA’S NEXT”, and suggests that we will see their next Android device announced at this event. According to the invite, the device will be faster, thinner, smart, and stronger. The indicates that this could be the Motorola Droid RAZR.

We’re expecting to see a device with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD screen, and 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, 1GB of RAM, and a CPU clocked at 1.2 or 1.5GHz. The device could also be made in a kevlar chassis. There’s bullets flying around in the video, and kevlar is often used for bullet-proof vests. You could call this device rugged, if anything!

Just wait for the official announcement on October 18 to know for sure!

The graph above shows pretty well which manufacturers provide updates to their device’s, and which don’t. HTC is the king with 13 devices running Android 2.3. Samsung again has the most devices running Android 2.1, and 2.2. Keep in mind that Samsung has the largest armada of devices out there, so they also have to do a lot of work to bring updates to their phones.
