Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a tablet
Windows 8 is set to launch later this year, probably in the third quarter. This will be the first Windows that comes with a tablet oriented version built-in, and also a separate version that will run on ARM architecture. It’s clear that Microsoft wants to broaden their mobile offerings outside of phones.
Digitimes reports that entry-level Windows 8 tablets will come as cheap as $300, or even cheaper in some cases. The most expensive Windows 8 tablets will again sell for over $1,000. This is interesting since the offerings of the current market leader in tablets, Apple, are more expensive than the cheapest Windows 8 tablets. Apple’s iPads again are cheaper than the high-end tablets that are targeting Windows 8.
Intel and Microsoft tagets to take the iPad’s market share down to 50% by mid-2013. The Apple iPad is currently at a share of roughly 70%.
Customers should have many models to choose from when Windows 8 is available. By the end of this year, up to 32 different Windows 8 tablets will be launched by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba.
