Microsoft Australia Lync and Skype for WP7

Microsoft Australia confirmed today that Lync is coming for Windows Phone, Android, BlackBerry and iOS in the next four weeks. Microsoft Lync is a great instant messaging client that can talk with Microsoft Lync Server or Lync Online available with Office 365 and Live@Edu. This will surely make Windows Phone even more appealing for business users.

We’ve earlier seen a Nokia device called Champange appear in log files of the “..i’m a WP7!” software. This phone was reported to be running version 7.10.8711, which is told to be a build of Tango. Skip to this day, and we already have build 7.10.8713 in the wild. The newest build was found in WP Bench logs. There is no word on what has changed, but it is always great to hear of process being made :)

Tango is the next update to hit Windows Phone. An exact release or feature set has yet to be announced, but rumors tell LTE radio support and availability in the first half of 2012.

Nokia Lumia 601Still remember the leaked developer video which featured a still unannounced Nokia Windows Phone? Well, it now seems that this device was the Nokia Lumia 601, and not the Nokia Lumia 900 we were hoping it to be. The image above is courtesy of Pocketnow. They have leaked an immense amount of Nokia phones in the past, so I’d say this is legitimate.

The Nokia Lumia 601 is obviously running Windows Phone. The camera module however is a bit special on this one. It resembles the one we’ve seen on the Nokia C7-00. IF this is the same module, then we’re looking at the first Windows Phone smartphone with an EDoF camera. This means that auto focus is out of the question, and we’ll have a fixed focus camera instead.

Previously the hardware requirements of Windows Phone have not made hardware like this possible. The recent change in the hardware requirements changed this, and we’ll even see devices without a camera in the future.

Nokia is probably targeting a lower price point with the Lumia 601. The new leaks would suggest a release at CES or MWC. Stay tuned for more information on this!
