Internet Tethering on WP7

Internet Tethering on WP7

Nokia has a pretty comprehensive Nokia Lumia 900 Q&A over at their Nokia Connects blog. There’s a wide array of details about the Lumia-series, so you should head over the site to see if there’s anything interesting for you.

One of the questions that caught my eyes is Tethering for the exsisting Nokia Lumia models. According to the post, the Nokia Lumia 610 and 900 will include it from day one, while the Lumia 800 and 710 will receive it in a future update.

Q: When will the tethering update for the Lumia devices be pushed out?

A: It will be in coming soon for 800 and 710 via Zune update, for 610 and 900 it will be available at launch.

We’ve earlier told that Nokia will begin sales of the Lumia series in China on March 28 on two carriers, China Mobile and China Telecom. Well, do a +1 to that, and include China Unicom in the equation. This means that Nokia’s Lumia will hit all three major operators in China on March 28, possibly resulting in world-record sales of the Lumia 800C and Lumia 719C at launch.

Nokia has signed contracts with two massive operators in China. The two launch partners will be China Mobile, which happens to be the world’s largest operator, and China Telecom.

The Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 will get Chinese equivalents in the form of the Lumia 719C and the Lumia 800C. We should eventually also see the Nokia Lumia 610 launched in China. The C postfix indicates that these are CDMA versions that work in China.

Both operators will begin sales of the Lumia 719C and Lumia 800C on March 28.

Digitimes, with their usual insight into the manufacturing world, revealed today that Compal is preparing to ship close to four million Nokia Lumia 610s in the second quarter of 2012. This would indicate that Nokia really expects their Lumia strategy to reach massive volumes. The whole Lumia series could generate sales of up to 6-7 million in the second quarter of 2012. Great news for both Windows Phone/Microsoft and Nokia!

Microsoft unveiled the first details of Windows Phone Tango at this year’s Mobile World Congress. WP Tango includes lower hardware specifications, and is designed to allow low-end handsets, like the Nokia Lumia 610, to run Windows Phone.

Stefania Duico, a Windows Phone executive with Microsoft Italy, has revealed that Windows Phone Tango will actually be called Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh. It remains unknown if he was speaking just of the update to existing phones (Mango to Tango), or also those that come pre-installed with this OS version.

The Nokia Tablet is one of the most rumored devices today. We have yet to see a leaked image, or even a render, of this device. So far we’ve just heard rumors of its existence. Today Digitimes is reporting that Nokia is in fact building a Windows 8 tablet. The tablet could ship as early as Q4 of this year, well on time for the Holidays.

Specs for this alleged device include a 10-inch screen and a dual-core ARM based processor, possibly a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. Nothing more can currently be said of it.

I’m currently running Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my EXOPC, and I’m loving it so far. I would love to see a Nokia manufactured device with the final version of the OS. Can’t wait!

Singapore was the first country to see SW 1600.2487.8107.12070 go live for the Nokia Lumia 800 and 710. Today I’m happy to tell that this update has reached the borders of the United Kingdom. More countries should follow soon.

Here’s a change log from Nokia UK:

Microsoft has revealed more information of the next update to Windows Phone, currently codenamed “Tango”. This update will enable devices with lower specs (such as 256MB of RAM, and running Quacomm 7x27a processors), to run Windows Phone. One of these devices is the Nokia Lumia 610, that was announced at Mobile World Congress last month.

  • Windows Phone Marketplace app restrictions – Some processor-intensive apps have memory requirements, and won’t work on phones with 256 MB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have on your phone by tapping Settings > About.
  • Podcast Subscriptions and Video Podcasts – You won’t be able to manage podcast subscriptions on your phone or watch video podcasts if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.
  • Local Scout – You won’t be able to use Local Scout if your phone has only 256 MB of RAM.
  • Fast app switching – This feature will not work if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.
  • SkyDrive automatic photo upload – You won’t be able to upload pictures automatically to SkyDrive if your phone has only 256 MB of RAM.
  • HD video playback – You won’t be able to play video compressed with some of the listed codecs if your phone has 256 MB of RAM.
  • Background agents – To free up RAM for the foreground on 256MB devices, generic background agents (PeriodicTasks/ResourceIntensiveTasks) are disabled.
