Nokia has published a video to show us how the N9 is manufactured. It is a really cool video on the company’s manufacturing process!

Intel Samsung Tizen

Wow, I just received an interesting mail from Intel. MeeGo and LiMo will be smashed together, and continue under the name Tizen. Tizen is a new open-source, standards-based software platform for smartphones, tablets, smartTVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Development of Tizen will be lead by both Samsung and Intel. The application framwork of Tizen will be built upon HTML5/WAC 2.0.

We should see the platform go live in 2012.

Here’s the whole mail I received:

Today, the Linux Foundation and LiMo* announced Tizen™, an open-source, standards-based software platform for multiple device categories, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Tizen builds upon MeeGo* and LiMo and will deliver an application framework built upon HTML5/WAC 2.0 standards to help developers reuse and extend their code across multiple OS’s, app stores, and devices.

For members of the Intel AppUpSM developer program, Tizen introduces new opportunities to expand reach into additional markets. The Intel AppUp developer program will support Tizen and provide comprehensive tools and community support to help you create compelling, feature-rich, and differentiated apps. Applications developed on Tizen will be able to be submitted to the Intel AppUp developer program for validation and distribution via Intel AppUpSM center and affiliate app stores.

R.I.P. MeeGo and LiMo! You can read more about Tizen from the official page by following this link.

Nokia N9 MeeGo

Nokia today announced that their N9 is available for pre-orders in Finland. Consumers can go to the company’s flagship store in Helsinki to actually play with it, and also pre-order it. The device will be offered in two storage flavors. The 16GB model will have a recommended retail price of 599€ (after taxes), while the 64GB alternative will run you down a 100€ more. Nokia also confirmed that the device will hit retail stores in Finland in October.

Eldar Murtazin just wrote an interesting little Tweet. According to Mr. Murtazin, Samsung is interested in overtaking MeeGo from Intel, and continue developing the platform further. The news come just a few hours after we learned that Intel will not continue developing MeeGo.

MeeGo was originally a joint project by Nokia and Intel. When Nokia decided to go Windows Phone only, they naturally also withdrew from the MeeGo project. Intel has ever since been developing the platform in-house, but this will apparently change in the future.

Please take this with a grain of salt since we haven’t gotten an official statement from Intel or Samsung.

Intel has allegedly cancelled development of the MeeGo platform due to lack of interest from hardware manufacturers. Intel and Nokia originally created the MeeGo platform to bring a Linux-based OS to smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle systems. Once Nokia decided to change their main smartphone strategy to Windows Phone, the whole MeeGo platform was left on thin support. Now also Intel is planning to withdraw from the project, and no-one are actually working on developing it. I guess this is the final sentence for the platform if this actually turns out to be true. We’ll see if some other developer will pick up the development process of MeeGo, but until that happens, I consider this platform dead.

Apparently Nokia N9 billboards have appeared somewhere in Kazakhstan. They say that the device will be sold by Technodom and Sulpak, two electronic stores in Kazakhstan. The billboard itself doesn’t give a date or a price, but Technodom’s website allows you to pre-order the N9 for 99990 Kazakhstan tenges. This is the equivalent of roughly 680 USD. Technodom also shows that the N9 will be released on September 9 in Kazakhstan.

sapiensbryan, a YouTube user, has posted 10 hands-on videos of a Nokia N9 on his YouTube account. The videos give you a pretty good idea of how the software works on the Nokia N9.

The Nokia N9′s web browser is pretty good. Check out the video to see how good the browser really is.

The Swipe page over at Nokia Sweden has now a countdown to when the Nokia N9 will be released. At the time of writing this post we have 49 days and 2 hours left till the release. This means that the Nokia N9 will go on sale in Sweden on August 23, at 9:00 a.m.

Will this date be a global launch, or is Sweden not in the first batch to get it? We’ll post more info when other countries join the countdown.
