White Nokia N9

Glossy White Nokia N9 64GB

Nokia used their Conversations blog to announce that a glossy white color alternative of the Nokia N9 is on its way. All of the other colors are matte, so this is a nice new addition to the N9 collection! The new color will arrive by the end of this year. First up for delivery is the 64GB version, followed by the smaller capacity options.

They also wrote that a software update is in its finishing stages, meaning that we’ll see PR 1.2 released before the end of this year.

Changes in PR1.2:

The update includes usability improvements, like music controls keys from the lock screen or closing apps by swiping them down by default and NFC tag reading is also added.

Great work!

Eldar Murtazin just wrote an interesting little Tweet. According to Mr. Murtazin, Samsung is interested in overtaking MeeGo from Intel, and continue developing the platform further. The news come just a few hours after we learned that Intel will not continue developing MeeGo.

MeeGo was originally a joint project by Nokia and Intel. When Nokia decided to go Windows Phone only, they naturally also withdrew from the MeeGo project. Intel has ever since been developing the platform in-house, but this will apparently change in the future.

Please take this with a grain of salt since we haven’t gotten an official statement from Intel or Samsung.

Intel has allegedly cancelled development of the MeeGo platform due to lack of interest from hardware manufacturers. Intel and Nokia originally created the MeeGo platform to bring a Linux-based OS to smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle systems. Once Nokia decided to change their main smartphone strategy to Windows Phone, the whole MeeGo platform was left on thin support. Now also Intel is planning to withdraw from the project, and no-one are actually working on developing it. I guess this is the final sentence for the platform if this actually turns out to be true. We’ll see if some other developer will pick up the development process of MeeGo, but until that happens, I consider this platform dead.

sapiensbryan, a YouTube user, has posted 10 hands-on videos of a Nokia N9 on his YouTube account. The videos give you a pretty good idea of how the software works on the Nokia N9.

The Nokia N9′s web browser is pretty good. Check out the video to see how good the browser really is.

Check out this video to see the Nokia N900 run Android, Maemo, MeeGo and Kubuntu Mobile. Pretty amazing to see a device run all of the OSs mentioned!

Just a short BTW, I’m attending MeeGo Summit FI, in Tampere Finland, April 15-16, 2011.

A short video showing the Nokia N900 running both the Maemo and MeeGo operating systems. Many thanks go to the MeeGo N900 hardware adaptation team for all of their hard work in making this possible.
