Firefox 1.1 RC 1

Firefox for Maemo got yesterday updated to version 1.1 RC 1. As the name suggests, this is the first Release Candidate for the final 1.1 release.

Here is a changelog of the biggest features that have changed from release 1.0 to 1.1:

Some of the bigger features include:

  • Form assistant improvements, including autocomplete
  • Start Page redesign
  • Auto update add-ons
  • New smart-tapping system for better tapping links, fields and buttons
  • Portrait support on N900
  • Context Menu with Open Link in New Tab and Save Image
  • Web content theme update
  • Improved Site Menu
  • Use volume keys to zoom on N900
  • Save page to PDF
  • Built in Crash Reporter

Important note for those of you who installed the 1.0 version via Ovi Store:

If you installed Firefox 1.0.x from the Ovi Store, you will not be able to upgrade to Firefox 1.1 RC 1 (either from the N900 Application Manager or by downloading the software from Mozilla). We are working to solve this for future releases so that anyone can participate in our Beta programs. Don’t worry, though, if you got Firefox 1.0.x from either the Ovi store or directly from Mozilla, you will be updated to Firefox 1.1 (final) when it is released.

Gartner today said that they estimate Nokia to have sold below 100,000 units of the Nokia N900 since its launch five months ago. Nokia’s previous top selling phone has been the N95, that was released in 2006.

Nokia sold below 50,000 N900s in January-March, while the iPhone has sold 8.75 million units during the same time.

A take from Reuters article:

The sales of less than 100,000 N900s compares with sales of 8.75 million iPhones in January-March alone.

The N900, which went on sale last November, is Nokia’s first phone running the Linux Maemo operating system, which analysts see as a key for Nokia to regain ground in the coming years.

In February this year Nokia unveiled a plan to merge Maemo with Intel’s Moblin operating system.

Nokia sold 50,000 N900s in the last quarter of 2009, and quarterly sales fell in January-March, Gartner statistics showed. Gartner does not track phone sales per model, but as the N900 is the only phone using Maemo, the statistics for operating systems show sales for the model.

Nokia just confirmed that the N900 will receive the long awaited PR1.2(V10.2010.19-1) firmware update today. UK users will receive the update today, followed by the rest of the world tomorrow on Wednesday 26th.

First up – new games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

Next are the improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

An additional update you will be pleased to hear about is portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customisable.

Sounds like a pretty neat update, and a must have for your Nokia N900 owners. Hit View Post to see a Video from Nokia Conversations.

Update: Full changelog added after the break.

MeeGo In-Vehicle was released a few days ago. In-Vehicle systems are designed to be used in for instance cars and airplanes as their entertainment system.

In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems are devices that deliver navigation, entertainment, and networked computing services in vehicles such as cars, trucks, planes, and buses. Automotive manufacturers in particular are increasingly viewing IVI systems as a key differentiator in their products. Drivers and passengers are coming to expect the same type of innovations they see in other devices, such as mobile computers and handsets, in their vehicles. As vehicles become connected to the internet, the demand for internet-based entertainment applications and services increases and MeeGo strives to accelerate the pace of innovation in IVI.

The MeeGo IVI software platform is designed to enable rich internet and multimedia consumer experiences for vehicles. MeeGo IVI builds on the foundation laid by Moblin IVI for rich multimedia, CE device management, internet, and automotive connectivity.
