9t05mac has an interesting read on what the next generation iPhone will bring. They say that the biggest new feature is actually in the software, where Apple will use a system called Assistant. To let new background processes, like Assistant,  run fast enough, the phone also features 1GB worth of RAM and a dual-core Apple manufactured A5 CPU. An 8 megapixel backlit camera sensor will produce quality pictures in both light and low-light conditions. A Qualcomm Gobi Baseband chip will ensure that the device works on both GSM and CDMA networks.

So Assistant is the biggest thing on the new iPhone 5? But how does it work? It is basically a drastically improved Voice Control application, that we saw introduced with the iPhone 3GS. The new Assistant will enable you to actually talk with the phone. If it doesn’t understand all of it, or it requires more information, it will ask it from you. You’ll also see a ‘conversation log’ of what you’ve been actually discussing. You can for instance ask directions, like “How do I get to Helsinki, Finland?”, and the phone should open the Maps application with directions to Helsinki, Finland. If you’d like to make a new appointment, you could just say “make appointment with Jay at 16:00.” Also the new Reminders are accessible via Assistant, enabling you to say “remind me to wash clothes when I arrive home.”

What I found really cool is that Assistant is linked to Wolfram Alpha! I use Wolfram Alpha constantly to count how many days there are left to some event. So for instance if I now type ‘Days till October 4th”, it will show me that it’s 7 days until we should see the next-gen iPhone released. Head over to wolframalpha.com to check it out for yourself! With this integration a user will be able to ask the phone to do almost anything, including unit conversions, currency conversions, history related questions, scientific questions, dictionary lookups and so forth. I would go crazy with a feature like this! It’s like having Wikipedia in your pocket :)

Apple is preparing to announce the next-generation iPhone, aka iPhone 5, at an even on October 4th. It is highly possible Apple CEO Tim Cook will announce the iPhone 5 instead of Steve Jobs. Under two weeks to go until possibly the most anticipated phone will be announced. Stay tuned!

Intagram for iPhone received a massive update to version 2.0 today. This adds, amongst other features, 4 new filters, 10x higher resolution, live filters, and a borderless option.

Here is a description of what the new features do:

Live filters – so fast, we let you see them live
See the world through Instagram’s stunning effects before you even snap a photo. Simply select a filter, hold the camera up to the scene and see the world through Instagram’s visual effects. We’ve re-written your favorite Instagram filters to be over 200x faster so even after having taken a photo, switching between them takes no time at all.

Four new filters
You’ve asked for more, and we’re excited to provide four brand new filters: Amaro, Rise, Hudson, and Valencia. With these new filters, we continue the trend of turning regular photos into beautiful snapshots. What’s most exciting to us is that we’ve teamed up with @colerise, an extremely popular Instagrammer, to produce these new effects. Keep your eye out for more collaborations to come.

Instant tilt-shift
Selective blur over 100X faster than before. Pinch, pan and rotate tilt-shift to give your photos unparalleled depth of field with live preview included.

High-resolution photos – 10x larger than before
Clarity and detail with every shot. By far, the most requested feature from both pros and amateurs alike, we’ve increased our photo size from 612×612 to 1936×1936 on the iPhone 4 (1536×1536 on the iPhone3GS). You’ll capture beautiful moments in all their detailed glory.

Borders now optional
The creative flexibility you asked for. Turn every filter’s border on or off to fit the mood and aesthetic of the scene.

One-click rotation
Easily rotate photos within the camera. No more sideways photos. Use our simple controls to make sure you’ve got the right orientation every time.

New icon
We updated our app icon! It’s the same look, but with more depth and dimension.

Sorry guys, the iPhone 5 doesn’t come this year. At least T-Mobile USA thinks this is the case. The image you see above is a screen shot taken from T-Mobile’s employee intranet, OneVoice, from a post made by the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Cole Broadman. A guy in his position should get news like this, so it could be real. Mr. Broadman is quoted: “We are not going to get the iPhone 5 this year.” So that’s it, no iPhone 5 this year.

Apple iPhone 5 chipset

The image you see above was posted on Weibo, a Chinese Twitter clone, showing what is claimed to be components of the iPhone 5. You see the CPU marked with A5 on it, indicating that it is the Apple’s iPhone A5 chipset. However, the design is not the same as on the A5 inside the iPad 2, and could hence mean that the image is fake. The battery again has 430mAh printer on it, but it’s most probably missing the leading 1, meaning that we have a 1430mAh battery on the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4 comes with a 1420mAh battery, so there is hardly any change in capacity.

Could this be the device we’ll see announced in the coming few weeks?

A white iPhone 4s has just appeared in AT&T’s inventory system. As you know, there isn’t an iPhone 4S on the market as of now, but it has been rumored to be coming sometime. The image also lacks the usual 16GB/32GB text. Could this mean that we’ll only see the iPhone 4s in a smaller 8GB alternative? Could the iPhone 4s be the rumored cheaper iPhone 4, only with some updated hardware?

This could of course be just a placeholder in AT&T’s system. The fact that the ‘s’ isn’t written in caps is also unusual for Apple’s naming, and could hence mean that this whole device is just a mistake, or a placeholder.

MacRumors received a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicating that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will be released in mid-October. It also stated that the final software will be delivered to assemblers during the timeframe of September 23rd through 30th. Possibly the biggest news is that the iPhone 5 is not receiving the rumored redesign. The design resembles what we saw in the leaked N94 model. Here’s what MacRumors concluded:

  • 512 MB of RAM: This is to be expected, as the next iPhone should be using the same A5 chip found in the iPad 2, which does in fact offer 512 MB of RAM.
  • Camera module height “almost same” as in iPhone 4: Camera thickness is the major limiting factor for overall device thickness, meaning that the next iPhone is not likely to be significantly thinner than the iPhone 4. Sony is said to have started shipping camera sensors to Apple’s manufacturers back in July, with OmniVision coming online to assist in September or October.
  • 3.5-inch display: A number of rumors have claimed that Apple will be using a larger display for the new iPhone, but Kuo’s sources indicate the screen will be the same size as that found in the iPhone 4.
  • Glass front and back: Although not 100% confident on this item, Kuo’s sources suggest that Apple will continue to utilize the same basic design of the iPhone 4, with glass on both the front and back of the device.
  • Manufacturing shares: Foxconn is scheduled to handle 85% of the production load for the new iPhone, with Pegatron taking the remaining 15%. Pegatron will be a bit slower to ramp up production, and will primarily be supplying Apple’s Asia-Pacific markets.

Foxconn

Digitime today reported that Foxconn is currently manufacturing 150,000 iPhone 5s a day. Foxconn is prepared to ship 5-6 million iPhone 5s in September alone, and top 22 million units during the fourth quarter.
