iPhone 4 Case Program

The iPhone 4 has gotten a lot of bad publicity in form of complaints and whining with how they have handled the ‘Antennagate’ situation.

Personally, I haven’t noticed a significant difference when placing my finger on the ‘weak-spot’, or by holding the phone in a death-grip kind of way. For those who complain, Apple has issued a free Case Program, that will let you order a free bumper or a case from Apple.

To do this, you have to download a program from the App Store called ‘iPhone 4 Case Program’. The program will ask for your iTunes account password, and will after that take you to a selection of free bumpers and cases. When you click on a bumper / case, you’ll see a gallery short description of it. Also an estimated delivery time is given to you. After you’ve chosen which bumper or case you’d like to receive, you just have to accept or edit the suggested delivery address and click submit. If everything went well, you’ll shortly receive a confirmation email where you’ll find the expected delivery date.

I just ordered my free case, and it is expected to be delivered as follows:

We estimate your order to be shipped by 06 Sep, 2010.
We expect your order will arrive by post to your shipping address on or before 09 Sep, 2010.

Two thumbs how Apple has done this, and how easy it was for me to order the case.

Sonera Micro SIM DIY

The iPhone 4 went on sale in an addition 17 countries today, and thankfully Finland was included. I was the 8th person to get the iPhone 4 here in Vaasa :) But, since I didn’t want to lock myself up for a few years on a contract, I needed to cut my old SIM (regular) to make it fit inside the iPhone 4.

This was actually quite easy, and I only used a pen, ruler and a pair of scissors. Actually, you don’t even need the ruler and a pen, just a pair of scissors. In the image above, you can the new Micro SIM card, and then my old regular SIM card cut so that it fits the iPhone 4. It’s very easy when you have a template around your new Micro SIM card itself! You just place the old SIM underneath this new Micro SIM and mark out what you need to cut, and then just use whatever tool you like to do the hard work. My choice of weapon is the scissors on the right.

Good luck and hit View Post to see the result!

I’m currently in the iPhone 4 queue in Vaasa, Finland. I’m the 8th person to arrive here. The local time is now 3:20, and they’ll start selling at 9:00.

Good timing since only the first 10 persons will get their beloved phone immediately, the rest will be delivered sometime in the future.
Happy queuing! :)

iPhone 4 White

Last week, Apple announced that the white iPhone 4 has been delayed, again.

Now we have info on what this manufacturing problem is. Due to the iPhone 4 being made out of glass on both the font and back side, it brings up a problem where light leaks out around the edges of the glass. This is the same thing that happens on LCD TVs, where you can light leaking from the corners of the screen.

Scott Mortiz had this to say:

Apparently, the back light from the iPhone display screen is leaking out around the edges of the glass and seeping through the back of the white phone, according to a person familiar with the manufacturing process.

As the source described it, if it were a metal or plastic material, a simple coating would fill in the gaps and block the internal light. Glass is an entirely different issue.

You could think that by making the white layer thicker, it would fix this. But this isn’t the case when you have the proximity sensor on the front side, and the back side needs to be the same color as the front.

Here is a short video showing the execution/loading times between every iPhone on the market, starting from the iPhone 2G and ending in the iPhone 4.

BTW, pretty cool difference in black levels when you compare the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4 (clearest difference at the end of the video where you can see them being shut-down).

iPhone 4 White

Apple on Friday issued a short press release to let us know that the white iPhone 4 has yet again been delayed. Previously Apple said that we’ll get the white version before the end of this month. Now Apple didn’t give a specific release timeframe for the white iPhone 4 availability, it will just be released later this year.

White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.
