Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S III

May 3rd is approaching fast, meaning we’ll soon get to know what the Samsung Galaxy S III will be like. Even though this device is touted to be the most securely held product in Samsung’s history, we’ve been able to see a few leaks every now and then. It remains to see if any of these rumors turn out to be true, though ;)

Today’s batch of leaked intel reveals that the Samsung Galaxy S III will come with 5 dedicated capacitive buttons. The three existing buttons seen on the Galaxy S II will be present, together with two additional ones. With the new buttons we will get one dedicated for Samsung’s S Cloud and one for Speech Recognition.

Design-wise the Galaxy S III will be much like the Galaxy Nexus. It will get a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 1.5GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor and Android 4.0 ICS. The Galaxy S III will be only 7mm thin, and wight under 120g.

Just over a week for the final announcement! Stay tuned!

Samsung has began the marketing efforts for their next Galaxy device, allegedly the Galaxy S III. Over the weekend they opened a new teaser site, http://www.tgeltaayehxnx.com/, which happens to be an anagram of “the next Galaxy.” Could Samsung do an Apple and call the new Galaxy just “Galaxy Next”?

To give you an idea of just how popular this device is going to be, then take a look at the teaser site. It’s down at the moment, a.k.a. a massive traffic spike :)

Samsung will release this teased device on May 3rd. Expect a few teasers and leaks before that happens. Stay tuned!

Google Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

A few reports this morning show that the GSM variant of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is receiving a minor firmware update. The OS build will go up to version IMM761, from the older IMM76D. The update reportedly fixes minor bugs like GSM connectivity issues and a screen lock lag when automatic brightness was engaged.

We should see the update go live in more markets during the next few weeks, so keep on checking your device’s OTA notifications to know when it’s ready for your device.

If you can’t wait for this update to hit your device, then you can try out an optional method described below:

The prerequisites:

  1. You need a GSM Galaxy Nexus with the product codename ‘yakju’. NOT the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, or ‘yakjuxw’, or ‘yakjusc’ or any of the other variants we’ve heard about. Check your product name before you begin using this app.
  2. You need to be running stock Android 4.0.2 (ICL53F) rather than any custom ROM.
  3. You need the Android SDK installed. Note the path.
  4. You need fastboot. (Windows or Mac)
  5. You need to unlock your bootloader. If you haven’t done that (and you really should), here’s how. (Note that if you haven’t already completed this step, unlocking your bootloader will wipe all data on your phone.)
  6. Download the Android 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 update from Google here.
  7. Download the latest ClockWorkmod recovery image from here.

Now, the instructions:

  1. Copy the OTA package above to the /sdcard folder on your Galaxy Nexus
  2. Drop the ClockworkMod file in the same folder you have fastboot in on your computer in the SDK folder (either /tools or /platform-tools).  Rename it to cwm.img to make things easy.
  3. Reboot your Galaxy Nexus to bootloader mode (hold volume-up and volume-down, then press power).
  4. Plug your phone into your computer, and open a command prompt or terminal.  Navigate to the folder with fastboot and the cwm.img inside it.
  5. At the command line, type the following: fastboot-windows.exe boot cwm.img (or just fastboot.exe if that’s what you’ve got)
  6. Use the ClockWorkMod recovery menu to flash a zip file from the SD card, and choose the OTA zip file you downloaded earlier.
  7. Let things run their course.

Galaxy S III pre-order on Amazon.de

Galaxy S III pre-order on Amazon.de

The super-awaited Samsung Galaxy S III has hit pre-ordering phase on Amazon. The device was first listed on Amazon Germany for a price of €599. A pre-ordering listing like this also confirms some of the specs, and here is the final list as claimed by Amazon:

  • 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, 16 million colors
  • 12-megapixel camera with LED flash
  • 16GB internal memory
  • microSD card slot
  • Android 4.0 ICS
These specs differ much from those that we got yesterday (here). No idea if either of these claimed specs will turn out to be true. What we do know though, is that the Galaxy S III will be announced on May 3rd, so stay tuned!

The video above could be the first video of the Samsung Galaxy S III. The model number for this device in the video is GT-i9300, which is believed to be the Galaxy S III. Due to Samsung’s superb secrecy regarding the Galaxy S III, we can’t really say if this is the real deal or not. If this isn’t the real Galaxy S III, it could be a Galaxy S III packed inside a development shell. This way the final design wouldn’t leak out before the final announcement.

Anyway, specs for the device in the video:

  • Android 4.0
  • 4.6-inch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1184 (DPI 320)
  • 1.4GHz Exynos Quad-core CPU
  • Mali 400 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • NFC
  • 16GB internal memory
  • microSD slot
  • 2,050 mAh battery
What do you think? Is this the Galaxy S III?

Lava Xolo X900 with Intel Inside

Intels’ CEO promised that the first smartphone with their processor is shipping this week. Back then we didn’t know exactly which phone this would be, but now it has been pinpointed as the Lava Xolo X900. The device is now shipping in India, and will go on sale next monday, on April 23rd.

This rather unknown device will come with faily decent specs. The Lava Xolo X900 has the following specs:

  • 1.6GHz single-core Atom processor
  • Dedicated 400MHz GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage
  • NFC
  • 1,024 x 600 LCD display
  • 8-megapixel camera, capable of shooting 10 shots per second

The Xolo X900 is unfortunately shipping with Android 2.3, but the company promises that an over-the-air update will be delivered to bring Android 4.0 on-board.

The Lava Xolo X900 is set to cost INR 22,000 off-contract, which translates into roughly $425 or 325€.
