Nokia BH-607

Pretty cool looking new Bluetooth handsfree from Nokia. The BH-607 has 7 hours talk time and 200 hours standby time. With just a 15 minute charge you get 5 hours of talk. The handsfree also comes with a customizable ‘Own Button’, that can be programmed to for instance mute the mic. As with every Nokia handsfree, also this device comes with digital signal processing that will filter out background noise.

The Nokia BH-607 can be yours for 69€.

Nokia will put a NFC-chip inside every smart phone that they release year 2011. A Near Field Communication chip can be used for instance to pay groceries at a store that is equipped with a NFC-reader. Anssi Vanjoki announced Nokia’s plans to use the NFC-chip at a Forum in Helsinki, Finland, today.

The NFC-chips range is only a under 4 centimeters, while a RFID chip can transmit much longer distances. NFC-chips are better for security, when you actually have to place the device on the reader, and it is hard to read it without the users approval.

Nokia today announced a quite interesting new accessory, the Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit. This is designed for emerging markets, where electricity is expensive or unreliable.

There’s two angles to this. The first is that the product is initially aimed at emerging markets. Places where electricity may be scarce, unreliable or expensive. Making it possible for a bicycle to charge a phone creates the difference between the chance of being able to communicate and the guarantee. In many areas, a bicycle-powered charging service might create a sustainable micro-business for some individuals.

The second angle is that this looks a lot greener than plugging your charger into the wall. While Nokia’s chargers have now largely put paid to the peril of unattended charging (see yesterday’s Eco Profiles post), not plugging in at all is more than 100% more environmentally friendly. It might also encourage owners to exercise, to boot.

Nokia didn’t announce how much this thing will cost you, but it can’t be much when it is targeted for the emerging markets where Nokia’s phones cost a little bit over 30€ before taxes and subsidies. That’s the way to do it Nokia!

The Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition was released in Finland last week. The phone is currently priced at 105€ before taxes and subsidies, and this makes it the cheapest navigation phone available. A car charger and car holder is also included in the sales package.
