Today is day two of Nokia Lumia 800 sales in Finland. I can’t really give you numbers of how much it has sold in the store where I work (Gigantti), but I can tell you this – it is selling a lot! Without looking at actual sales numbers, I’d say that I’ve sold more Lumia’s after the launch than N8′s during its few days of sales.
The Nokia Lumia 800 has actually sold out in some stores in Finland. Elisa Shopit told publicly today that the Nokia Lumia 800 has sold out in some of their 60 retail stores.
This is especially great when you know that Finland is currently being plagued by a crazy cold wave. In Vaasa, where I live, its currently -27 °C!! Imagine going out in that weather, trying to cold start your car when you’re not even sure it will start, and drive to the nearest retailer to get yourself a Nokia Lumia 800. It needs some serious dedication just to buy a phone in this country. Apparently there are enough of us crazy people who go out in that cold weather just to buy a phone.
Skype has finally been released for Nokia Belle. The software has previously only been available for Symbian Anna devices. The application has been updated to match with the Belle UI, and has also received a significant speed improvement. The exact version of this is 2.1.23, and it weighs in at 6.9MB. Skype for Nokia Belle can be downloaded from the Nokia Store.
Here’s the description from Nokia Store:
With all the benefits of Skype on your phone you can save money and stay in touch when you’re on the move.
Make free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM on 3G or WiFi.
Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad.
Share pictures, videos and other files from your phone.
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
Eldar Murtazin leaked today an image of a device believed to be the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus. He didn’t specifically mention what device this it, but given that it looks a lot like the Galaxy S II, I’d say that it is the Galaxy S II Plus.
The Samsung Galaxy S II Plus is expected to get a speed bump to a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. The buttons have been slightly redesigned and gone all capacitive to match with Android 4.0′s overall design. As of now, Samsung has only one device running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and that is the Nexus S. The Galaxy S II Plus would hence be the company’s second ICS device.
An announcement at Mobile World Congress in a few weeks is highly possible.
Joe Belfiore, Senior Vice President and Windows Phone Manager, Microsoft
Pocketnow has seen a video where Joe Belfiore, Senior Vice President and Windows Phone manager, talks about Windows Phone 8, codenamed Apollo. Apparently the video was meant for Nokia partners, but somewhere along its route it took a wrong turn and leaked out. The video talks about a number of Windows Phone 8 features that we’ll most probably see officially announced Mobile World Congress in a few weeks.
Here’s a summary of the article:
Hardware changes: Multicore processors (in plural), four new screen resolutions, removable microSD card storage, NFC
Windows 8 integration: WP8 will use many of the same components as Windows 8, meaning that developers can reuse code when porting an app from app to desktop, or vise versa. Mr. Belfiore mentioned the kernel, networking stacks, security, and multimedia support. Desktop Zune is out, a new companion app and syncing software on their way. Deeper SkyDrive integration. More seamless cloud syncing.
Application ecosystem: Microsoft expectes 100,000 available applications in the Marketplace Apollo is released. This would mean that we’re possibly looking at a release in the fourth quarter. Native code (C++) support. Apps will be able to communicate with other applications (app-to-app communication).
Data management: DataSmart, which aims to reduce and simplify tracking of data usage. WP8 will actively attempt to give WiFi connections priority, and even auto-joining carrier-owner WiFi networks. Data usage Live Tile. Internet Explorer 10 will use a proxy server to compress web traffic before its being sent to the device, which ultimately will reduce data usage.
Business: Native BitLocker encryption (128-bit, full-disk encryption). A “Private Marketplace” where companies can deploy proprietary software behind their company firewalls.
WordPress for Windows Phone got just updated to version 1.5. The update focuses on speed and reliability, and here are the changes:
Stats: We’ve moved the stats section to its own page in the app which greatly improved the loading time for the blog panorama. While we were at it we fixed some bugs and improved the styling of the charts. The result is a much smoother experience for keeping up with your site’s stats. Just tap the new stats button in the actions pane to view your stats.
Post scheduling: The ability to schedule posts was a missing piece in the app. Now you can easily set a future publish date for your posts right from the app.
Comments: The comments list has been updated and now features a simple way to select multiple comments for bulk moderation.
Infinite scrolling: Your posts, pages, and comments now keep loading as you scroll down the list. No need to tap an extra button, it’s quick and easy.
Media uploading: The uploading reliability has been greatly improved. Now the app uploads your media in bite-size chunks, and automatically retries if you lose your connection. This has been tested a great deal and works well in most everyday situations.
Samsung briefly said in a statement that the Galaxy S III will not be announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The company will host a separate Galaxy S III event in the first half of 2012, so it could still be a few months away.
The successor to the Galaxy S II smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.
February 1st is finally here! This is a day many mobile enthusiasts in Finland have been waiting for. Why’s that? Well, the Nokia Lumia 800 is now available in Finland! I’m one of those lucky ones who got their hands on a new Nokia Lumia 800 today. The device is currently selling for 429€, so it’s pretty cheap!
The first evidence of BlackBerry 10 smartphone has leaked. BB10 is codenamed BlackBerry “London”. The image above is claimed to be a render of the BlackBerry 10. As for the hardware, both a TI OMAP5 and Qualcomm chipset are being tested (bot of them a dual-core CPU and running at 1.5GHz). We don’t really have more to say about this for now. Stay tuned for more leaks of this nature!
