Apple decided to release its own Maps app a year before contract with Google ended

We’ve earlier been under the impression that Apple had to release its own Maps app due to an ending licensing deal with Google. However, according to The Verge, the licensing deal is still valid for an entire year. Apple simply decided to pull the plug on Google’s offer due to them feeling it was not up to par with Google Maps on Android, which has features like turn-by-turn navigation. The New York Times reports that Google is hard at work to release a standalone Google Maps app for iPhone and iPad, but the app will not see the light of day until the end of the year.

What do you think? Should Apple have waited for another year before releasing its own Maps app? Many have said that the app should only have been released as a beta. So for instance a beta this year, and next year as a replacement to the Maps app using Google Maps? That sure does sound like a better execution strategy than what Apple did with the situation.
