Yesterday we posted a teardown of the new iPad by iFixit. This revealed the internals of the device, but today’s teardown goes even deeper by exposing what the new A5X system-on-chip has hidden inside it.

As with the Apple A5, also the A5X is manufactured by Samsung using a 45-nm manufacturing process. The A5X chip is about 36% bigger compared to the A5. The A5 measures at 120 mm^2, while the new A5X measures at 163 mm^2. As seen in the image above, the increased size is mainly caused by adding another dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU in there. GPUs now take up roughly 25% of the whole chip, while the A5′s GPU took 10%.
