ARM Processor CPU

Samsung today announced its first dual-core CPU called Samsung Orion.

The new CPU is clocked at 1GHz, and runs on a dual-core ARM CORTEX A9 CPU. The new chip will deliver 5 times the 3D graphics performance over the Hummingbird processor. Other interesting features include 1080p HD video encoding/decoding at 30fps, support for two on-device displays and a third external screen (for instance an HDTV) hooked up via the on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface.

Even though you might think that the second core will make this thing power-hungry, it actually has an opposite effect. It is possible to turn off the second core while it’s not needed, and this will lead to lower power consumption when compared to today’s mobile processors.

Selected partners will receive this new CPU in 4Q2010, and it should be ready for mass production in 1H2011.

Nokia N8 - Aluminum Black Orange Blue Green

Tapani Kaskinen, Senior Comms Manager at Nokia, today confirmed that the Nokia N8 will be available on September 28th. Those of you who have ordered the Nokia N8 directly from Nokia, should receive it on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010.

The Nokia N8 is the first phone to run on Symbian^3. Personally I have to say that I’m pretty impressed about this device, and I think that it will sell quite good. For instance here in Finland, you’ll have to pay 499€ to get this thing, and this is cheaper than what you’d have to pay for a competing device with roughly the same specs.

Here’s a demo of Apple’s HDR image captre that you’ll see in the iOS 4.1 update, that is scheduled to arrive this Wednesday.

The HDR image is actually a combination of many images. The camera captures the image with many different exposure settings, and they are later combined into one final image by the software.

Check out this speed comparison between iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.1. The test was done on an iPhone 3G.

You’ll see speed improvements like the ones in the video this Wednesday, when iOS 4.1 is released.

The unofficial world record of how many apps a phone OS can run simultaneously got broken today. Previously, the Samsung Omnia HD had the record with 62 (here) apps running simultaneously, but the new ruler is the Nokia E5 with 74 applications The previous record was also done on a hacked firmware, and this new record is done on an unaltered firmware.
