Samsung Orion Dual-Core CPU Announced

ARM Processor CPU

Samsung today announced its first dual-core CPU called Samsung Orion.

The new CPU is clocked at 1GHz, and runs on a dual-core ARM CORTEX A9 CPU. The new chip will deliver 5 times the 3D graphics performance over the Hummingbird processor. Other interesting features include 1080p HD video encoding/decoding at 30fps, support for two on-device displays and a third external screen (for instance an HDTV) hooked up via the on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface.

Even though you might think that the second core will make this thing power-hungry, it actually has an opposite effect. It is possible to turn off the second core while it’s not needed, and this will lead to lower power consumption when compared to today’s mobile processors.

Selected partners will receive this new CPU in 4Q2010, and it should be ready for mass production in 1H2011.
