Nokia just released a new beta of the Nokia Messaging for IM.

Nokia Messaging for IM offers a desktop-like IM experience on your Nokia device.  You can stay in contact with your friends across multiple communities at the same time, easily switch between them and customize your status by community.  Highlights include:

  • Chat with your friends on the Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi communities.
  • (new!) Easily change your custom status, avatar (picture) and switch between conversations and communities with just a few taps on touch-based devices.
  • (new!) Preview new messages in the Chat home screen widget.  When signed in to multiple communities, the widget will cycle between them.  You can also change your presence within the widget itself.
  • See your friends’ avatars and set your own using the camera or an image from your gallery (for Windows Live Messenger (new!), Gtalk (new!) and Ovi communities).

The new touch-based beta client is available for the Nokia N97 mini and Nokia 97.  It has not completed a full testing cycle on the Nokia 5800 and Nokia X6 but has passed the early tests – so give it a try.

Gartner today said that they estimate Nokia to have sold below 100,000 units of the Nokia N900 since its launch five months ago. Nokia’s previous top selling phone has been the N95, that was released in 2006.

Nokia sold below 50,000 N900s in January-March, while the iPhone has sold 8.75 million units during the same time.

A take from Reuters article:

The sales of less than 100,000 N900s compares with sales of 8.75 million iPhones in January-March alone.

The N900, which went on sale last November, is Nokia’s first phone running the Linux Maemo operating system, which analysts see as a key for Nokia to regain ground in the coming years.

In February this year Nokia unveiled a plan to merge Maemo with Intel’s Moblin operating system.

Nokia sold 50,000 N900s in the last quarter of 2009, and quarterly sales fell in January-March, Gartner statistics showed. Gartner does not track phone sales per model, but as the N900 is the only phone using Maemo, the statistics for operating systems show sales for the model.

Microsoft sure is aiming high with their Windows Phone 7 OS, that is if you believe expected sales numbers during year 2011.

Microsoft yesterday told at the ReMIX event in France that they will sell 30 million WP7 units before the end of 2011. By comparison, Apple has sold 51+ million iPhones in three years. But, Apple’s strategy is a little bit different when they only target one device at a time, and Microsoft again will fight this with a full front battle with many devices.

Guess they could do this, and I will be one of those 30 million buyers :)

As some of you might know, I today attended a Windows Phone 7 Developer Hub in Helsinki, Finland. Since this was an all-day event, I haven’t posted that many articles today.

It’s hard to describe how I feel about the coming Windows Phone 7 in any other word(s) than “Amazing!”. It will have it’s faults in the beginning, but what I saw and heard today was really convincing. I also played around with the Asus WP7 prototype, and it immediately felt good and sort of easy to use.

Have you noticed that almost every big web-service around us is actually quite simple, and the layout is clean? Google Search, Bing Search, Twitter, Youtube, MySpace, just to name a few of them, are all following this ‘simple and functional’ way of thinking. In my opinion, WP7 will be the first mobile OS to join this same simplicity and functionality. Now when I look at my iPhone for instance, I see a bunch of colorful icons that actually don’t blend in with the layout, they don’t seem to belong together. With WP7 all the extra eye-candy will be taken away, but still you can call the OS graphical. Bear in mind that the 3rd party developers still can make their applications and games look the way they want. Developers can make their extra-graphical applications if they want, there is no restriction on that.

I hope to hear a lot more of WP7 in the future, and for the time being it is definitely the next mobile OS of my choice. This of course could be changed during the coming announcements that we will see during the next few months.

Well this one didn’t comes as a shocker, but Microsoft just confirmed via their official Twitter account that Steve Ballmer will not attend WWDC  2010.

The rumor that started earlier today told that Steve Ballmer would announce Mac/iPad/iPhone development support in Visual Studio 2010. Good idea, but now when you think about it’s quite insane.

Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer will eat up 7 minutes of Steve Jobs’ keynote at WWDC 2010. According to an analyst with Global Equities Research, Steve Jobs will talk about Visual Studio 2010, and a possible ability to develop iPhone/iPad/Mac applications on a PC.

According to Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with tiny Global Equities Research, 7 minutes of Steve Jobs’ keynote is allotted for Microsoft. Microsoft will reportedly be talking about their development tool Visual Studio 2010. The new version of Visual Studio will reportedly allow developers to write native applications for the iPhone, iPad and Mac OS.

Cool gaming demo on a Samsung prototype running Windows Phone 7. Shows the kind of power you’ll get on Windows Phone 7 and its requirements. The phone is basically a modded Omnia HD, with a Snapdragon processor and Windows Phone 7.

According to the story on WMPoweruser, it took one employee two weeks to convert the Xbox Live! game into a Windows Phone 7 game. 90% of the code is identical.
