ARM Announces Dual-Core Cortex-A9 Processor Designs
ARM announced today that they’re developing a new dual-core processor, designed to be used in low-power devices such as mobile phones. The new chip will use the company’s Cortex-A9 platform. The new processor will operate at a staggering 2GHz speed, while the power consumption stays below 0.25W. This new chip should be available during the last quarter of this year.
Today, companies such as Apple and Samsung uses ARM chips to power their mobile phones and music players. The announcement states that we will see the new chip in devices in the beginning of next year. This could mean that for instance the iPhone will see a speed-bump in January/February?
If Apple decides to use this chip, it will most probably be a downgraded version. This is what Apple has done in the past to make the power consumption, and heat loss even lower.
